played doom3 for a while and i noticed that when i look around with the mouse there is a horizontal distorted line that appears on my lower half of the screen. I believe its gotta do something with the AA or AF but not sure. Is there any way i can get rid of it? Have a FX5900ultra btw.

i'd appreciate any kind of help :)

i believe nvidia has a utility that allows you to rotate your screen in 90 or 180 degree increments. check it out.. and use it to rotate your screen 90 degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise so that line isn't at the bottom of your screen anymore.

I bet playing with the screen rotated, would really mess you up.
Good ideal, and its simple, I would try that.

I take it this line is only in Doom3, and not in other stuff as well?

You can turn off AA and AF if you want to try it. Not sure if it will help though. Go to your display properties, then in settings click advanced. In this adavanced settings, click on the tab with the little Nvidia logo which is normally followed by your cards name, here there will be a menu on the side, one of the choices is Performance&Quality, you can adjust AA and AF in there.

ok, thx guys but i think everone is geting a wrong idea here. The distorted line I was talking about shows up only sometimes and is not something that is fixed. It only shows when I move the mouse real fast from left to right (kinda like a horizontal cut). One of my friend also had it onplaying MOHAA with his 9600pro and he was the first one to point it out to me. Think I also had it playing CS with a ti4400, but not sure. I think its gotta do something with the rendering if i move the mouse very fast from left to right when im standing infront of a wall or something. I already tried AA and AF settings.

just tried it out on Doom3 and Far Cry demo. Its only horizontal, only affects close objects like walls, also happens when strafing left to right continously. In Far Cry i see some kind od distorted line when standing infront of a textured objects up close and strafing or moving the mouse fast left/right. When doing the same up close infront of a plain wall there is no line.

I noticed the EXACT same thing on my card BBA9600xt, I have tried everything from refresh rate changes to AA and AF off to disabling fast writes and nothing has worked, I think it's just some glitch.

Just to chime in--I'm seeing the same thing in Doom 3. I've got a 9800 pro, with AA and AF off. It honestly never really bothered me too much, but occassionally it is noticeable. The horizontal line is kind of reminiscent of the 2 aperture grille lines on my monitor...you see them if you look for them, otherwise you don't notice.

i was really wondering if i was the only one seeing this thing, but im glad im not all alone. Anyways, will try the vertical sync to see if its any better, though, i think enabling vsync will pull down performance. thx for replying guys !

Anyone else got any suggestions, comments, concerns about this glitch-thingy, wahtever u wanna call it?

the funny thing is that i was actually making a weak stab at breaking the seriousness of this forum by being funny. line at the bottom of your screen... rotate your screen so the line isn't at the bottom of the screen anymore... ha ha!.. get it? ha ha.. ahh.. eh... hmm...

yea i got it thx ... haha, great joke..., i was amused how someone can actually advise what u were saying cause it doesnt really solve the problem at all. But i was just being polite thanking u since at least u made the effort of typing something to my question

I believe its a problem with v-sync. IIRC, the problem wont get better unless the fps is in sync with the vertical scan lines (whether its 60hz, 75hz, etc...) which would limit the fps to the refresh rate hence the name v-sync. Another solution would be running without v-sync (which most people do for benchmarks) but that would produce tearing unless your running number that are higher than the refresh rate.

Some solutions -

Lower refresh rate
Increase fps

You're on your own for that

The problem you are describing is exactly what happens- "tearing"- when you disable v-sync. It does look bad occasionally, but I do get a 33% framerate increase when it's disabled.

I have a similar problem. Vsync does get rid of it, but since i run it at high @ 1600x1200 it lowers my fps to 44 average instead of 56. I think it is because of the game's tic speed being at 60 hz. Normally to get rid of tearing you can do 1 of 3 things. 1st you could turn on vsync, 2nd you could up the graphics settings and lower your avg. fps, 3rd you could turn down your res. and up your refresh rate (which may help in some games but may not in others). But because the game's tic is at 60 hz you cannot up your refresh by overriding it without loosing fps, for some reason it lowers fps by forcing a certrain refresh rate in drivers. I think the only option is to go down 1 res and turn on vsync or deal with the tearing.
