I have an external hard drive that gave me a drive letter error one day. I accidentally clicked that stupid windows will fix this drive thing and not sure if that was what messed it up. What it does is opens up fine but all my video, audio, text, and image files are there but do not work. I can try and open them but nothing happens. Is there a way to salvage my data or do I need to just format it and call it a loss? I have removed it from the enclosure and accessed the drive with a dock so the enclosure was not the problem, or at least it makes no difference now.

Hi there StrictlyRebel,

What is the model of the drive?
Unfortunately, my guess would be that the drive is failing.
You can try to boot up Ubuntu from a CD or a flash drive and see if you will be able to open the data stored on the drive. In case you do, try to transfer it to your OS drive. Here's a thread on Ubuntu Live CD: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

After that, you can test the drive with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Let me know how this goes,

It is a 2TB toshiba external. CystalDisckInfo said it is good. Is it possible there was some drive letter fluke or other error? Can I look in some kind of disk log to try and see what went wrong. I tried Easeus recovery and it just posted the not working data files so no difference.
