Steam is the exact reason I gave up on PC gaming a couple years ago and went 360 exclusively. The last game I bought for PC was Crysis. Where I live there is no such thing as DSL, or any high speed internet besides satellite or wireless solutions with 5gb limit. If I cant go to a brick and mortar store and buy the game and THEN install and run the game without an internet connection then the devs don't get my hard earned cash. DRM = FTMFL.

I'm sure getting screwed on game prices, paying for multiplayer, and having shoddy hardware is much better. Fun fact: You can set Steam up so that you can play your games offline.

Another fun fact: 250ms+ ping time wireless higher speed than dial-up but still only 1-1.5 Mbps wireless and no land based solution makes for no multiplayer fun. Therefore I don't buy games for the multiplayer aspect, it's just not feasible where I live. I will admit steam is a great place to buy games and such and they have some deals, but with a monthly bandwidth cap along with a still not so fast connection makes steam my enemy.

I hate to say it, I really do, but PC gaming is almost a thing of the past. Heck that's why I even got into high performance computing was because I started out playing Mechwarrior on an old HP 700mhz celeron and it could barely play it and I wanted alot more powerful hardware but now with fewer and fewer titles being released for PC, I have no want or need for anything other than my little Asus netbook anymore and my I5-750 - GTX260 desktop that I built awhile back does little more than simple internet duty, which is just as easily handled by my netbook so its off more than its on.

If I want to play a game - of COURSE I'm going to install it, idiot.

Why should I have to install ANOTHER Program that's not the game? (That, by the way, has ACCESS to my computer or I can't play the games.)

Easy game library management, no need to ever remember CD keys, streamlined updating process, huge discounts on PC games, ease of access for independent developers to publish games, Steam friends list and community, forums, O/S Agnostic titles (Valve specific, but still awesome), soon to be platform agnostic (PS3 gamers playing with PC gamers), cloud based single player progress saving.

[citation][nom]digitalexplosives[/nom]Beat me to it, exactly, Steam is nothing but DRM dressed up as Digital Distribution Software, i have no choice but to use it..[/citation]

You say that as if it's a bad thing. What is terrible about Steam? And the bullshit reason people keep giving about "you have to be online" doesn't fly. And if being online with a decent internet connection isn't the problem, then what is?

This is also something else I do not like about steam. I don't mind installing games on my PC but if I have to install other software to even play the game then no thanks ill pass.

In my previous post I stated that Crysis was the last PC game I bought but I was wrong I just looked at my software storage rack and saw that I did indeed purchase Aliens VS Predator for PC. I remember installing it and wondering why the hell it kept asking me to install steam and when I said no I couldn't play the game so I gave in and installed steam and then went through the whole internet DRM thing. Once I beat the game I uninstalled it along with steam and threw it back on the shelf and haven't touched it since. Installing two seperate programs just to use one is a no-go in my book.

For you people who don't like Facebook and Google for what they collect on you - don't be surprised at what Steam has on you because it has access to your computer.

Like what?

If you actually used Steam you would know that the only thing they do collect in terms of personal information is your computer specs, and even then, it's VOLUNTARY. Each time Valve wants to know, they put a request out, a pop-up appears and there's a check box right there that says "I do not want to send my computer specs" and that's it.

The only other thing they might look at is purchasing and browsing habits, which is no worse than any e-commerce site in the entirety of the internet.

Steam is not invasive, they don't invade your privacy, and anyone who's dealt with real DRM issues (Spore anyone?) knows that Steam is a godsend.

[citation][nom]keczapifrytki[/nom]The Witcher series is made by a Polish company called CD Project not Bioware. Us Polaks have no other AAA titles so please do not take this away from us. Thank you[/citation]
hahaha, nice : )

i was glad in the end my copy of half life 2 was on steam because one of the many install cds was bad and lo and behold i was able to download the whole game off of steam. also one day i tried entering the CD key of my old copy of half life:GOTY into my account and it unlocked all the half life 1 series games for me when all my old copy game me was just half life 1 and counter strike

I was excited about Duke Nukem Forever but if it's going to be a steam game then I WILL NOT buy it ever. I hate steam and will continue to boycott anything released through steam. Making any Game a steam game is like telling the fans to go F themselves.

Thrilled about Duke finally getting here, but alas I have something called dial-up. DSL is still miles away from me. First went all my multi-player around the age of Quake 3 then almost all gaming for me as you cannot even install from a bought and paid for Game DVD! Must D/L the entire F---ing game from the internet. Is there anyway to install a Steam polluted game if you own a legal purchased Disc? O ye gods me hopes so! Some one please have MERCY. Please no smart A--ed comments of just move! i have already got that from friends.

Hahaha over here your lucky to get PC games in shops. Maybe the sims and a few large sellers like COD or L4D if your lucky. Shops like Game and gamestop dont sell new simply because the 2nd hand PC market is dead and new titles sell for less than consoles.

tell you what, Ill care about brick and mortar game shops and their opinion on how games are sold when they actually start to stock games at a competive price. Atm Amazon > steam for price yet steam makes life sooo much easier. Instead of bitching get your fingers out of your ass and actually develop what the customer wants. evolve or die simple as!

I have mixed feelings about steam. on one hand, i love not needing the stupid disk to play the game, on the other hand, i hate logging in to steam just to play a game (its like asking permission, can i play my game pleas? )and then getting annoying popups, i just want to play the game not see advertisements. im not sure if there is a way to stop that, maybe offline mode? anyway, not a deal breaker.

The Brick and Mortar stores for pc gaming are a dying breed, they make their money more off console games than PC games so I really don't care if they stop selling PC games.

I only have 18mb internet and I can install Bad Company2(5.5GB) from Steam in under 40 minutes. Once I get 60mb, it should be quite a bit faster.

I also don't have to hunt down discs to re-install.

I find Steam cheaper, easier to manage, and faster than owning a disc. I'm not sure why people get so up-in-arms just because of a bit of DRM.

I didn't realize that the game was being released on consoles. How can people play FPS games on a console, especially anyone that ever played the original Duke 3D.

I'm not sure... How could ANYONE ever play Goldeneye? Playing first person shooters on a console isn't that bad.

And if you're REALLY crazy about a mouse and keyboard, try out the Xim3 for the 360.

I started installing duke off the dvd.... then steam wants to validate and download files... this was at 8.30... its now 10:30 and steam is still on 69% getting 288kbs on it...
GOD I HATE STEAM.. RELEASE A GAME WITH IT ALL ON THERE...THEN....... VALIDATE ONLINE IF THEY MUST...BUT FOR GOD SAKE.. STEAM IS TERRIBLE

Why should I HAVE to install Steam. If you like it, more power to ya. But forcing me to install something I loathe is reprehensible. If I can't figure out away around this, I'll throw it away.
