Why there's no dvd games for pc and would there be in the future?. I ask cause as far as I understand dvd games are only available for game consoles like PS2 that would help render high quality graphics.

I dont think DVD drives in PC's are widespread enough as of yet to justify the switch over. Whereas there's a CDROM drive in every modern gaming computer. It'd be catastrophic for a publisher to produce an incredible game on DVD, if half their target audience was unable to play it without an upgrade.

I was also thinking maybe production costs had something to do with it, but I really have no idea of the cost of CD vs. DVD.

Years ago (1998?) when the first Baldur's Gate came out, you could buy that on DVD. The CD version took 5 disks (I think), while the DVD was on a whooping 1 disk.

I have to disagree. Just about every commercial computer out there right now has a DVD-Rom drive. Right now they are becoming as inexpensive as CD-Rom drives.

It's really a shame game makers aren't using the DVD format. Enter the Matrix 4 CD's? This is becoming a little absurd.

If PC games aren't switching to DVD format by 2004 I will be very surprised.

More than 2 CD game is really annoying. IMO, most of the gamers have DVD-ROM. If DVD games start to come, then rest of the gamers who doesn't have DVD-ROM, will buy one. This will be no problem, because DVD-ROM's are now as cheap as CD-ROM was 3 years ago

But what about graphics quality is it the same for pc and game consoles that can play dvd games. I mean there could be another reason for developers not to deploy there games on dvd for pc other than storage capacity.

On another thought. Since pc has more capabilities and flexibility, I would assume in the future when dvd games are playable on pc that are powerful enough to produce amazing gaming experience and graphics, there should no reason for one to buy a gaming console, isn't it ?.

That has nothing to do with the quality of the game. What determines the quality of the game is the hardware and the developers who write the code for that hardware. PC's have the capability to be much more powerful than any console. So using your logic, shouldn't PC's be using the DVD format and not consoles?

Putting PC games onto a DVD format would not enhance the quality of the game. And alot of PC games have graphics that far surpass what any console, including X-Box, can produce.

And you obviously don't understand the market. You see, alot of kids don't have their own PC's. Relatively speaking, it is much more expensive to play high quality games on a computer than it is just buying a 150-200$ console system. So a game console is the answer for most kids out there. That's why you always see PS2, X-Box, and Gamecube games at the top of the sales charts(if you included PC games in the chart of course). And that's with three seperate loyalty brand game consoles. So you see there will always be the need for game consoles. Who knows, maybe someday consoles will become as powerful as the most current PC, maybe even more powerful. But not likely.

I beleive it is just a question of price. If you look at the price of a blank DVD it is about 1,50$ (<A HREF="http://www.discmakers.com/rom/product_pages/blankdvdr.html" target="_new">http://www.discmakers.com/rom/product_pages/blankdvdr.html</A>), compared to a blank CD 0.30$ (<A HREF="http://www.discmakers.com/rom/product_pages/blanks.html" target="_new">http://www.discmakers.com/rom/product_pages/blanks.html</A>). So you can buy 5 CDs for the price of 1 DVD. Also printing a DVD is harder than printing a CD so the production cost must be higher.

production cds and production dvds are not burned. they are cheaper than any blank cd or dvd out there. besides, 1 dvd is cheaper than 4 or 5 cds. it wont be long before cds will be replaced by dvds. look at the floppy, office 6 was released on disk to cater to the people that didnt have a cd rom. and that was on 45 3 1/2 floppys! and you people are complaining about 4 cds?

Hell yeah I am! Just because we only have to deal with 3 or 4 cd's as opposed to 45 floppies doesn't make it right. We have the technology to put any and all games onto 1 DVD.

I imagine that as hard drives get bigger and DVD becomes the standard, we'll see games that come on three or four DVDs. Then we'll really be glad we dumped CD-ROM.

I have Riven on DVD. Came with a videocard years ago.

The issue is price. That's the only reason they haven't moved over from what I understand.

The price of the CD or DVD is a very small part of the total price. Usually new games are sold around 50$ to 60$. In that you have the price of the disc (maybe 1$) and the rest is development cost and profit. Profit is usually about 10$ to 20$ including store profit and developers profit.

So the price at which a game is sold is not directly influenced on which media it is on.

The retail price isn't influenced, but the profit margin of the distributor is.
