Hi

I've looked over the forum but haven't found the answers to the questions I seek.

I'm going to get a writter and also a DVD player (for my TV)

So I can get a multi region TV- DVD player but what about the writers??

I'm wanting the new plextor but is it multi-region or is there a hack.

Also which format do TV-DVD players play/use?? + or - ??

Thanks

Region coding is only an issue with pressed DVDs that you purchase at a store, ie. a Disney movie. Region coding is not an issue with computer DVD players/recorders as they will read any DVD-ROM.

As for home theater DVD players, you can find units that will play DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM. Most any DVD player will play DVD-R. But only select selection players will play the other formats. You can only find playback for DVD-RAM for example, on Panasonic players. Sony players are the most compatiable and will play DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. So if you want to be able to give anyone a burned DVD and ensure they can play it stick to DVD-R. If you want a great DVD player that will play just about every format get a Sony.

Hoped that answered your questions.

Cheers,
Conrad

As far as I know the region is selected on the install of the burning software, and DVD-R was the first format out and works well with pretty much all the existing players on the market.

For DVD-ROM drives and writers you can get multi-region firmware. This is for commercial DVD playback.

Try the link below for firmware updates then follow their links for region-free firmware.

You will also need to add multi-region capability to the player software. The firmware only lets the drive access the disc. It doesn't bypass the region lock. The player software or region hack has to do that.

I don't have a need for this myself so hopefully someone else will give some recommendations. The firmware is free. I don't know about the software but you can find some downloads in the last two or three links below.

By the way, DVD-ROMs and DVD writers will let you change the region 5 or 6 times but your player will lock the region after the maximum attempts. If you reflash the firmware you start from scratch (at least I think you do).
