I have a Dimension 4600 with a TEAC DVD+RW drive.

I'm using Sonic RecordNow to backup some important stuff to DVD.

I notice that I can't read the resulting DVDs on other computers - I *can*
read them OK on my PC.

I'm worried that if my PC dies, I won't be able to read my backup DVDs on
another PC.

Any ideas?

check in the Sonic settings. It might have a save setting that does a quick
save for computers with Sonic onboard. If you then load the disc into a comp
without sonic it wont be able to read it.

Roxio does a similar setting whereby it can save as UDF or ISO. Under UDF
the receiving computer has to accept a piece of software from the disc
before it can read it. The ISO setting is a standard that can be immediately
read on any reader without having to install further software.

Saving and Ejecting when under the ISO setting takes a little longer.

Thanks Eric.

Sonic has an option "File System". It's set to "ISO + Joilet".

Sonic help tells me "Choose ISO+Joliet to make a disc readable by as many
computer as possible.".

I don't like the sound of "as many ...as possible".

Home DVD recording is still in its infancy and an industry standard is
still being worked on. "As many as possible" is the result of that lack of
standard.

No, "as many as possible" is to avoid lawsuits. As long as a DVD is
properly written & finalized, I have had no trouble reading it on other DVD
players, be it plus or minus standard.

That's not what I'm experiencing. I create the DVD on my server and cannot
read it on either of the other two machines in the office.

I note you said "properly written & *finalized*".

Is this my problem? These backup DVDs are erased and then written to every
week.

Ah yes, DVD+RW rewriteables. Have you installed a UDF reader on the other
machines?

With DVD re-writables, be sure to use the 15-20-minute "Full
Erase" option. I've had problems with "Quick Erase" from Nero 6
and the Sonic utility on Memorex DVD+RWs in my Dell 4600 with the
NEC ND2100A (not listed even at NEC or Gear, apparently an OEM
most resembling NEC's ND2500).

I guess they just ain't CDs.

I haven't had any problems using the Quick Erase, or with Nero just
overwriting the contents of the disc. I use Ricoh and Infodisc +RW's
on my NEC 2500. This is with video only, for data discs I only use +
or -R.

I don't think I've seen anyone that has said they have a NEC 2100 that
didn't come from Dell. Since there's a hacked firmware to convert a
2100 to a 2500, I suspect the 2100 is really a 2500 with a crippled
firmware for Dell.

I have two +RW and one -RW (re)writer and a good many readers. The only
problems experenced so far is (1) my Thomson DVD player that often
"hiccups" playing recorded DVD's, but since it also does that on
prerecorded DVD's, I just assume it is a bad quality player.

For the rest I haven't experienced any problems so far, but ofcourse you
might just call me lucky 😉

In any case I have had much more troubles in the past with CDR's, of which
there only was *one* standard, than now with DVD's. My conclusion is
therefore that problems are caused more by faulty or incompatible media
than by the double standard.
