DVD works, CD doesn't

I have an old Presario 17XL260 laptop (PIII 500 MHZ, 256 MB Kingston SODIMM memory, swappable drive (floppy/combo DVD/CD drive)) that recently started acting funny. The DVD/CD drive will recognize and play DVDs, but not CDs. I was so desperate I even rebooted my notebook with the original configurations. No dice. Can a combo drive go bad with one type of disk and not another? Someone suggested I use a CD cleaner disk in there, but isn't there a single laser doing all the reading?

Try updating the drive's firmware. Download DISCinfo (<A HREF="http://discinfo.rpc1.org/#Download" target="_new">http://discinfo.rpc1.org/#Download</A>), run it, hit [CTRL] + [F], and hit search.
