I just got an e4400 and a p5l-mx and overclocked the fsb to 285 from 200. the multi is 10x, how come in cpu-z the core speed changes from 1708 to 2850 ie the multi goes from 6x to 10x. when the computer is idle its at 6x, but when i open media center or something it goes to 10x. is this normal?

yes, if you have speedstep enabled. this option is found in the bios. when enabled it reduces the core clock in order to save power when the systemn is idle. as soon as more resources are needed it will return to your set clock. its usually nice to have on if you like to save power, otherwise turn it off.
