E6300 1.86Ghz running at 1.4Ghz? Remedies please, not BS

I have a E6300 1.86Ghz processor that is running at 1.4Ghz. After some trial and error and looking through my system, I finally figured out the reason for this is my FSB speed is at 200. For some reason, no matter what I do in BIOS, the speed stays at 200. I had BIOS set it automatically, which shows 266, but once it booted it reverted back to 200. I tried setting the speed manually to 266 and again, once it booted, it went back to 200.

Why is this happening? Can it do with the MB's BIOS? Why does it show me 266 in BIOS but end up booting up as 200. This is a very annoying problem, any help would be great, thanks.

My system specs:
Gigabyte GA-945GZM-S2 LGA 775 motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86 Ghz
G.Skill DDR2 533 1GB RAM
XFX Geforce 7900GS 256MB
Western Digital 320GB HD
 
Yeah I tried that too...I turned off all the EIST and all the things that limit speed clocks, etc...still boots at 200. Actually, it beeps, and then reboots again at the slower clock speed.
 
I am 99.999999999% sure it is just speedstep kicking in. Try shutting it off speedstep and EIST I think it is in the bios and see what happens.

you know... we really should start some "for newbs" threads, answering their "which one", "how to", and "help!!!" threads.

even though i'm trying to be as patient as i can, i have to admit that these things are starting to get to me...
 
Another gigabyte MB, eh?

This one is different though. I remember from the other post listed for DS3 or DS4 where they had hidden menus, so if I remember correctly they had to hit 'ctrl+F1' while they were in the bios. I'm going by memory so I could be wrong.

Not sure if its the same deal for this GA-945GZM-S2. I suppose if some menu options are hidden from the user, things will not get adjusted perhaps.

Even though it may be an annoying problem, the system should revert to normal speeds when the CPU is under load. With speed step on, it should help the system run at least cooler when not in use.

Of course after that one post, the user said his CPU still stayed at 1.8 ghz even when prime95 was used. Later on he finally found that EIST was disabled, the multiplier was set to the lowest one, which explained why his CPU never did get to its stock speed under load.

I guess its just a matter of the user getting to know his/her bios better.
 
the Gigabyte GZM supports FSB800 max so theres why your missing the speed, the newer revision of the boards allows overclocking (forcing the 1066 support needed) to allow it but iv seen alot of issues with systems with that setup - some of em take it, some dont etc (motherboard wise).

the 954 GZ chipset doesnt officially support FSB1066
 
Yup, I tried that, going into BIOS and disabled anything that may limit or slow the bus speed down. Still gives me the same problem...FSB sticks at 200Mhz. I tried overclocking, BIOS didn't respond. Tried manually setting the FSB to 266, BIOS beeped upon reboot and reverted back to 200Mhz.

Manual

Your motherboard only supports 800Mhz FSB, your processor is 1066Mhz FSB.
If your Motherboard is v3.0 and has the latest BIOS (version FG) you can Overclock it to work with 1066Mhz FSB processors.

After doing some quick searches... I believe Apache is correct, as well as ghost.

The MB is only going to do what it's capable of doing. Thats what happens when you don't have full support, and only partial support.

Though amazing how it can still force it to run at 800FSB from that list. :lol:

It would run a e4300 or e4400 at rated speeds.
You bought the wrong Motherboard for your processor, that isn't the motherboards fault.
You need a 945GME, 965GM, or ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 northbridge if you want a mATX that supports 1066Mhz FSB processers.

Your motherboard only supports 800Mhz FSB, your processor is 1066Mhz FSB.
If your Motherboard is v3.0 and has the latest BIOS (version FG) you can Overclock it to work with 1066Mhz FSB processors.

Still, nobody has helped answer the question: when you set the FSB faster in the BIOS, why it never keeps the setting. I understand that if you try to set it TOO high (and the system won't POST), it will reset it, that makes sense. Saves you from having to clear the CMOS, definately a nice feature to reduce headaches. But, as mentioned, with the FG BIOS you can run at 1066 FSB. I've tried that, and it works. So clearly, one should be able to set the FSB to say, 266 Mhz and the system should boot fine, and the BIOS should be able to keep that setting set.

Pressing CTRL + F1 does add one additional menu in the BIOS menu, but it's pretty much useless and doesn't give you any more overclocking options.

I'd like to know, if you put an e4300 in this MB, and you set the FSB to 266Mhz, what happens?

It states in the manual, and in the BIOS, that you can set the FSB anywhere from 200Mhz to 600Mhz. It seems pretty unreasonable (particularly if you're not using the onboard VGA) that you wouldn't be able to set the FSB to 333Mhz and run the memory at 2x (667 DDR2).

edit: BTW, I asked Gigabyte tech support about this, hopefully I'll hear back from them some time next week.

BTW, properly overclocked the OP's processor would spank your X2 6000......twice :twisted:
While you may be right, the AMD X2 3600+ (65nm) does kick Intel's ass in terms of VALUE. And it's plenty of CPU power for 99% of people.

Before the Core, AMD was crushing Intel, so I would really hate to see AMD go out of business. If it wasn't for AMD riding Intel's ass, no way would Intel have given us the Core Duo yet. Competition is good. Let's hope AMD beats Intel again soon, (and then Intel responds, etc).

Funny though, I remember my 1Mhz Apple II seeming more "responsive" than today's PCs.
 
Check Memory Clock Multiplier, sometimes it is set to 2, 2.66 or 3. If you only have a 533MHz Memory, with a Memory Mutiplier of 2.66 which will require you to fix your FBS at 200MHz

200MHz * 2.66 = 532MHz, based on this, if you increase your FBS to 266MHz, that is

266MHz * 2.66 = 707MHz, which I do not think your memory can handle this speed, and these days BIOS will reset to default which is 200MHz if it can't boot @ 707MHz on Memory.

So if you trying to use 266MHz FBS, try lower your Memory Multiplier to 2.0 which will be within the limit of your memory.

Just a suggestion, might work, may not. Good Luck anyway. :)

That's true...for about 6 more days. Come next Sunday the Core 2 based Pentium Es will come out, and should outperform the the 3600s and 3800s they are up against at their price point.

It is just simply some guy looking for help with a simple question, if you do not wish to post help, don't bother, why giving the guy a hard time calling him noob this noob that, everyone is a noob at some stage.

and look at the quote above, simple question turned into an Intel vs AMD again.

There are only 1 or 2 posted with suggestions or with links which lead to a different topic of help, but most of you simply replied to take the piss out of the "noob"
 
Wow. I did not realize how many assholes are around this forum. Apparently, one too many.

The OP already mentioned int he 3rd post that he disabled EIST..... yet some of went on calling him a NEWB.... Everyone's knowledge is not as great as some of you or they simply overlooked some basic info. Just cuz some of you know more than the OP, there's no need to "cap" on him and make yourself look like an A-hole.

Apparently he bought a mobo that doesn't support 1066fsb and this could have been said in the 2nd 3rd post but some of you had to come out and show your true colors.

Way to go!
