E7500 or Q8300?

I am looking to upgrade from my E2140 (Pentium Dual Core) OC'd at 2.4ghz (though Win 7 only reads it as going to 2.13ghz, odd) to either the E7500 (C2D), Q8300 (C2Q). Of course the Q8300 is better than the E7500. The difference is only $30 (the C2D being cheaper of course). I would really like to get the C2D, but is the C2Q that much better? Thanks very much.

2 years ago, E7500 would be the no brainer choice between the two.

However, more and more applications utilize at least 3 cores now and therefore the Q8300 is definitely a MUCH better choice out of the two CPUs now.

"Most games" includes the very old games, bro.

Almost all the recent games utilize at least 3 cores and some games that utilize all 4 cores will be released soon.

I do. Problem is, whenever I go on their site to see what they have it shows me the only 2 processors they have are 2 extremely crap intel celeron processors.

And microcenter is too far of a shlep to see what is there and I always assumed that newegg was cheaper

But you can get a Q9400 for 140??

There is a scrolldown bar that allows you to select the microcenter in your area. If you don't select the correct one, then it won't be able to show you what's in stock and what's not.

I used to work at microcenter and we had Q9400s on sale for 139.99. Get the Q9550, it is on par with the top level PhenomIIs and for $169.99, that is almost $90 cheaper than Newegg

It says that there's only 15 different CPU's there. Surely that must be wrong. I do see the Q9550 for $170 however. If they do not have the Q9400, I will get the 9550.

It didn't come with the mobo. I chose that CPU because I was on a budget and it was an easy OC. It was supposed to be an interim CPU till I got a quad core (which took about 2 years lol).

I checked the mobo site and has a list of supported cpu's. All the 1333mhz FSB cpu's are supported (though I did have to update the BIOS)

8800GT. I've been even told on the steam forums multiple times to get the C2Q. Is this OC with or without stock cooling? would a 3.6ghz C2D with 3mb cache be faster than a C2Q at 2.66ghz (which you can OC to 3ghz on stock cooling, I've read) with 6mb cache?

EDIT: Sorry I didn't read your post correctly. You were talking about the 8300 and I'm talking about the 9400. But even still, with the 8300, the C2D @ 3.6ghz beats out the 8300 (which is 2.5ghz and 4mb cache)?

Not only would it be faster, it would blow it away! Steam forums! Apparently they don't read the benchmarks or reviews comparing C2D and C2Q. Just check out Tom's Hardware charts for best gaming CPUs. With an 8800GT, you won't need more than an OC'd E7500. I had an 8800GTS 512 and with my E8400 at 3.2, 3.6, and 4 Ghz, the videocard gave very little gains with each increase. So I had to go to a GTX 260.

This may sound crazy, but since you said that you only use this rig for gaming, and you didn't say you were looking to upgrade your video card, there's a way you could save a lot of cash. Buy an E5300 for ~$60 and overclock it to 3.4-3.6 GHz. I think that would provide you with the best CPU/GPU balance with your current card. Though the E5300 is an 800MHz part, it overclocks magnificently with its 13x multiplier. I BSEL modified one to put in a 1066 MHz only mobo and without further overclocking it runs at 3.46GHz

Thing is, I am planning on getting a new video card over the summer, so I want a CPU that won't bottleneck a GTX260 or a 5770 or something.

The E7500 won't bottleneck the new GPU's?

Also the OC'ing the E7500 to 3.6ghz is with or without stock cooling?

Ignore my previous post; an E5300 is going to be inadequate to your new card. With regard to overclocking on any Intel cpu, the stock cooler will be insufficient. It's as if Intel 'undercools' them on purpose as a way to remind you that if you are going to overclock, you are on your own.

Well I have my E2140 OC'd to 2.8ghz right now using stock cooling and temps are around 40C idle (dont know about ingame though). but i guess the higher end ur right.

So I guess I will get the Q9400 because I really don't want to get a 3rd party HS b/c theyre around 50 bucks for a good one

Yeah that the problem with microcenter web site. they seam to always show the cappy cpu's but the new cpu's sometimes dont show. The trick i learn is use google. Just type in "microcenter: (enter cpu here like core i5)" and you find what you want.
