Heya all:

Well its the end of the road for my Asus P4G8X-Deluxe, atleast one of its lives anyways, i killed it last night, may it rest in peace.

What happened you may ask, well i will tell ya, but it isnt pretty.

I was changing out CPU's, I decided to buy a p4c 3Ghz and see if my mobo could handle it, well after some shady circumstances im not really sure what killed it, because as i was replacing the HSF i broke the plastic retainer clip on the mobo, which i replaced, however when i started the computer up i couldnt get it to be stable no mater what i did, even when i put the old CPU back on it still wasnt stable.

I came to the conclusion either i handled the mobo too roughly when i was changing out the retainer clip, or when i tried to soft clock it to 200Mhz FSb it was just too much for it, either way its dead and im gonna have to RMA a previously perfect mobo, what a drag, i knew there was a risk the CPU wouldnt work on the board, but i never dreamed i would damage the mobo in the process, bad mojo man.

Anyway thats my story, and the moral of the story is, if you have to change out the HSF retainer clip be extra carefull, and dont try and put a p4c on a mobo designed for a p4b EVEN if the manufacture says it is theoretically possible...

I am praying my new p4c and crucial memory werent damaged as well. I guess i will find out when i get the mobo replaced.

On the bright side i ordered a Abit IS7 to replace it, which will be arriving on either friday or monday depending on how fast they process the order, the only thing this mobo doesnt have that my old one did is Gb-LAN, but im sure i can live without it. Also my Asus is still under warantee so i will RMA it sometime soon, no hurry though.

sigh...a possible 5 days of down time isnt going to be fun
🙁

Update
The company i ordered the Abit IS7 shipped it out the same day with 2nd day air so it will arrive on friday, just in time to be back up and running for the weekend, woot!

Some of the IS7 boards ship with the 3Com G-Lan chip. I don't know why, but I got one. Good luck.
