I see three main differences between these. The 1850 system has a few more input options, a few extra sound customization options through its remote, and the possibility to connect an additional sub-woofer to the Edifer pair. However, I did not see any such companion sub-woofer on the Edifier site, but I guess you could get such a thing. Without the subwoofer added, the speaker pair appears to be almost identical between the two models, so I would expect virtually identical performance.

IF you do get an add-on subwoofer with the 1850 system, recognize its limitation. Both speaker systems you have noted are what are called "2.0 sound" systems. That is, they can handle TWO stereo sound channels (front left and right). IF you add the...

IF you do get an add-on subwoofer with the 1850 system, recognize its limitation. Both speaker systems you have noted are what are called "2.0 sound" systems. That is, they can handle TWO stereo sound channels (front left and right). IF you add the sub-woofer, what the 1850 system will do is take the low-frequency parts of both channels and re-direct them to the single sub-woofer to enhance the bass sounds. Note that it is normally found that very low frequency sounds from a sub-woofer are not very spacially oriented - that is, you are not clearly aware of exactly where they are coming from, so it is common to have only ONE sub-woofer "channel".

Your sound card, however, has more options IF you have enough speakers. It is capable of up to "5.1 Surround Sound". That is, it can generate and output separately six sound channels:
left and right (stereo) front
left and right (stereo) rear
front centre
sub-woofer
Edifier, like many other companies, also sells a 5.1 sound system, their Model R501T III, but I'm sure it is more expensive.

When using that sound card with either of those "2.0 channel" speaker systems, you would configure the sound card NOT to generate all those outputs, but to limit itself to sending out only front left and right stereo because that's all the speakers can do. You probably would not try to send out a separate subwoofer signal even if you had a subwoofer to use, but that MIGHT be an option.

Incidentally, we have a much simpler 2-channel stereo Edifier system we use for background music in a small retail clothing store we operate. We're happy with its sound and have the bass control turned up full. However, that's not the same as trying to get thumping great battle sounds out of a gaming system.
