Can anyone outline the procedure for removing the alternate boot entry
the boot.ini file in XP?

I have tried editing it from instructions on the internet but when it
restarts the alternate boot line still shows up.

Thanks

Have you been here? It is pretty straight ahead.

Not knowing what you've already tried, nor what version of XP you have (Home
or Pro), this is how you would do it in XP Pro.

Control Panel
System
Advanced
Startup and Recovery
Settings

You have to remove the read-only attribute BEFORE editing it. Otherwise,
the edits you've made won't save.

I suppose a warning to be careful or you'll risk hosing the file and being
unable to boot to your OS goes without saying.....

Would you post the contents of your boot.ini file. Should be an easy fix.

Editing in BartPE is easy. No need to change attributes here.

Thanks to all. I was able to remove the Read-Only and then edited OK.
