That price seems like it has an extra zero in it compared to what they can justify with the iPad 3 being able to pack a 1080p> screen into an entire tablet for only $500. $3500 seems in line with the spec bump from current 30" monitors as well more so than $35k.
Wow...it'll be quite some time when it becomes a more mainstream product. I'm hoping 2560x1600/1440 display prices to come down so most PC users can shift from 1080p

You're also paying for size, better circuitry, more uniform brightness, and 10-bit pixels with a 16-bit lookup table as opposed to one with 6 bit pixels.

and lower quantities of supply and demand
4096x2160 monitor has 3.8x of a 1920x1080 monitor.
Imagine running three of those 4k monitors. That would be like running 11-12 1920x1080 monitors.
One would need four 680s or 7970s, and liquid cooling for extreme OCing. And even with the graphic rendering monster it would still require sacrifices in other graphics eyecandy and frame rates.

$35,000 seems about right since their 25ms 4k display goes for 21,000 euros.
What profession requires such a monitor? And, even if there is such profession, in current financial situation, what company would pay for this monitor if they can get 2 (or more precisely, 2.4) of Dell's U2711 cannot (at 1/24 the price)?

Perhaps video processing jobs in offices where there is not enough room for two monitors.

I see, there's space for one 36" but not for two 27"... I see...
