the forums here tell me my Q6600 stock clocked is giving my 3870X2 OC a bottleneck in my performance at 1280x1024 resolution. which is the better option should i change to an E8600 or OC my Q6600 to 3.2Ghz?

I doubt if the Q6600 @2.4 ghz is bottlenecking your 3870X2.

If your that worried about it, clock up the CPU and retest. I doubt if you will see a huge increase honestly and going to a E8600 I dont think will make more than a few frames difference.

What's the point to buy a new cpu when you have this one?! You can OC very easy to 3 ghz without even increase the voltaje plus you have 4 core not 2. I really don't see the point to buy another one when we have a decent cpu.

Get an aftermarket cooler and overclock that bad boy. Works out much cheaper, and you'll end up with a 3-3.2 GHz quad core instead of a dual core.

Even at stock it's not bottlenecking your 3870X2 severely enough to have a faster CPU make a huge difference.

Don't always believe everything you read on the forums. Especially on this subject; for some reason this particular issue has been blown way out of proportion on many forums.

Can you describe any symptoms that make you believe that you have this problem?

NOTE: Many people that have microstuttering problems with the 3870x2 incorrectly believe it is a bottleneck causing the problem.

+1

Most people have limited concept of what causes a bottle neck. In your case, your good. Id be willing to bet youd see less than a 10% increase by jumping to 3 ghz. I would say your resolution is more of a limit than anything honestly.

No way man. That set up is great. I have 2 3870 cards running (Both running at x16 so it's the same as a 3870 x2) with a q6600 and while it was running at stock speeds I was able to run any game at 1280x1024. Crysis and everything ran with considerable frames per second.
