Enabling SATA III Speed.

Hello, i had a question about my ssd running in 3gb/s speed. I own a Sony Vaio SA, and the SSD i am using is Crucial M4 256GB SATA III. After installing the ssd, and window 7 pro 64, all updates, i checked in Intel Rapid Storage, and it tells me that my SSD, is operating in 3gb/s speeds, in other words, SATA II speeds. This SSD, is capable of working at SATA III speeds (6gb/s), and my laptop supports SATA III, now how do i enable SATA III, as in BIOS, there is no option for this. All of my drivers are up to date, including the firmware for the SSD. Your help would be kindly appreciated! Thank You.

Note: SSD was running in 6gb/s prior to reinstalling Windows.

There is a Bios or UEFI (every computer has one) it is just a matter of finding what button gets you in. It is usually F1, F2, or Delete, but may be F10, F12, F14, Escape, Alt, Tab, or any number of other buttons or combinations. However, I doubt that the Bios holds the answer to your problem as the transfer speed is generally negotiated between the HDD and mobo automatically.

Hello, thank you for the reply, i downloaded and ran the ATTO benchmark, my max write speeds where around 230mb/s, and read speeds max where around 270mb/s. This is roughly half of the speeds, that this SSD is capable of. And to note, my laptop sata cable is a custom design by sony, so the sata cable is not an option. I remember earlier that the SSD was running in 6gb/s speeds, prior to reinstalling windows 7..

There is no configuration in bios for your problem.
If you connect your sata 3 on a sata 3 slot it will automaticly work as sata 3.
Would it be possible that your laptop has both sata 2 and sata 3 slots?
maybe you connected your drive to a sata 2 slot.
even if your system would downgrade your ssd to sata 2 you should still be
in condition to reach ~300mb/sec since sata 2 interface supports ~300 mb/s.

By the way this drive has this specs:

Sustained Sequential Read: Up to 415 MB/s (SATA 6Gb/s)
Sustained Sequential Write: Up to 260 MB/s (SATA 6Gb/s)

its inpossible to reach more than 260 mb/s write speed.
You got 230 mb/s.

The only thing where you should worry about is reading speed.

There is only 1 sata connection between the sd drive and the motherboard connection. So that option is also eliminated. I will try it out in a different laptop, essentially the same model, sa/sb and check if it reports the same problem. thank you all for the help.

I did by using an old BIOS version, 2 years now and no problems so far. Performance is much better.
