I thought I didn't have to install an ethernet card on this motherboard like in the older builds I made but when windows 7 tried to find my wireless router it said it didn't find any hardware for internet or something to that effect.

Solution

I guess I just got overwhelmed with what all I was trying to do in my ltd. time. I'm somewhat embarrassed to tell you what the problem turned out to be: I had not installed the MB disc with the drivers for my MB.:mouais:

But because I was looking into this ethernet thing to check on that SSID, I ended up better off because I learned my surfboard modem had never been activated when I ran my cable of my old computer into it...

Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1150 Desktop Processor BX80646I74790K

It states on description that it has:

Second LAN Chipset
Intel I211-AT

Max LAN Speed
Dual 10/100/1000Mbps

Wireless LAN
Wi-Fi 802.11ac

Bluetooth
Bluetooth 4.0

I don't know. I will have to figure that out. How do I check that? I didn't spend much time trying to set up the wireless connection so it might just be I didn't click the right thing in windows. I have a wireless router in the same room where I'm trying to connect to our wireless connection. I'm not quite sure how to set up on a new build. And too, am used to XP. Wind. 7 is different.

I just opened the properties of my current computer wireless connection and it states SSID and in the box next to it is my name for that and it requires a name and password and is wep encrypted.

To see if your router broadcasts its SSID you need to login to the router itself.

Open a browser and type your router's local IP adress in the adress bar (the IP adress will be in the router's manual, for me its 192.168.2.1 but it's diferent across the world and with different routers). You'll be presented a login screen. Type in your router's password, NOT the password you use to connect to the internet normally. After that, there should be a tab labeled Advanced Options, or Wireless Network or something similar, it's different with every router. Under those tabs you should be able to set the SSID and there should be an option to broadcast that SSID. Make sure that option is ticked.

When you've done that, normally the network will show up in the list of Networks when trying to connect from your PC.

The one I used to use no longer works. I had to get some foreign teck support in past for my internet problems and they were never able to help me but i think they changed something. I can't log into my default gateway anymore. I also tried using admin and that didn't work

In that case you should look up the default password in the router's manual (probably admin but could be different) and do a factory reset of the router. Don't forget to change the password immediately afterwards!
That should allow you to login and change the necessary settings.

After SSD, the name of my connection appears and all my other computers can connect to it. I don't see any " broadcase" feature under any of the settings.

Hm. Well if your other PCs can 'see' the network then broadcasting is most likely enabled anyway.

Can you take a screenshot or screenshots of what happens when you try to connect with your new system?
Upload the screenshot to tinypic or imgur or whatever similar site you prefer and put the link in your post.

So I got that taken care of with cable comp. and then set up a better security with my wireless network WAP2 rather than the old WEP that I had before.

Thanks for all the help. It was productive and I learned some new things about wireless routing.

I don't understand something. I thought I was putting in an encrypted password but when I type in the default gateway in my address bar, it shows my ssid and the password. So can't anyone see that? I think I need to change my ssid now to something more complex but I don't know that it won't be visible to others. When I type in defautl gateway, it lets me log in with the mfg. defaults which is blank on one and admin on other.. When I re-set my wireless router, I guess I got rid of all my security it appears.

When you reset a router or modem, all your passwords are deleted and the factory standard password is put in its place.

The WPA2 password you set is for connecting to the network only, to login to the router you need a different password.
As for anyone seeing it, they'd need to be connected to the network to even get to the router's login screen.

How can I require my router to take a name and password rather than allow the name and password to be blank or admin? Is that supposed to be in the linksys set up screen?

It'll be somewhere in the router's settings, after you've logged in.

If you can't find it you can consult your manual, it should be in there. Or post the exact brand and model of your router and I'll see if I can find it for you.
