Ethernet port only working with a 4 Pin RJ45

I am using Powerline Adapters to connect my PC upstairs to my home network.

My problem is that my PC will only pick up a 4 Pin ethernet cable. If I connect a 8 Pin RJ45 it will not detect it.

This is nothing to do with the powerline adapteres as I have tested them on two other devices with 8 Pin cables. I have reinstalled the NIC drivers from scratch.

The problem is the same on both Windows and Linux. This leads me to think it's probably a hardware specific problem?

Any Ideas?

Many thanks in advance

It seems problem is not with hardware but with color coding

Thanks for your reply.

That is how my cables are wired. I have tried Straight through and Crossover cables with no luck.

The cables that work are only connected on pins 1,2,3, and 6.

This has me stumped.

crossover is used where 2 same devices has to be connected while straight through is used to connect different devices. As today straight through works between 2 systems because Many moden Ethernet host adapters can automatically detect another computer connected with a straight-through cable and then automatically introduce the required crossover. 8 wires of Ethernet are not used 4 of them are leaved as spare it is fine to use 4 wires or you can connect 8 wires but 4 will be used of them.

Yes, its working fine at 100mbps. But I would like to use 1000mbps for file transfers across the network, which requires all 8 pins.

Yes, all devices have Gigabit ports, the only problem is that my NIC on my PC upstairs won't recognize cables with 8 pins. Tried Cat6 and 5e. In the long run I am going to ditch the powerline adapters and run Cat6 in the wall cavities.

Tried both of those. 8 pin cable works in the laptop fine.

I really can't work it out. Other than the port on my PC is faulty
