It's true that they should've made an android phone years ago. But WP7 is miles ahead of android in terms of usability, and that's what nokia is about. They are the mass market phone maker for anyone - not just the nerds (android) and the narsisistic (ios) types of people.

Have had Nokia Lumia 800 for a while now. Lovely phone. Fits just right in my hand, has a nice feel to it. Definitely a solid device and a beautiful too. Down-point for me is the camera quality (come on Nokia, where is your flagship camera gone?) and the unfinished OS. Not automated enough automation (selecting multiple items, working with copy/paste etc.) compared to Android. Lack of apps too, big time. Has strong GPS though. Locks in 1-2 sec outside every time and good to go.
In other words it's a business phone not a toy like an Android or iOS. Feels and looks the business. If the public will be patient enough (doubt it) it will pick up and become a strong competitor to iOS and Android (we need one). It's a windy road though for Nokia and others embracing Windows OS.

Issue is availability and user interface. Windows 7.5 looks very business like and simplistic. Android users will all the fancy widgets draining the battery in no time would not like WP 7.5. Since I had clean Android running myself the transition to Windows 7.5 was very easy for me. Although I had to wait a while until I got my hands on Lumia 800. I'm not in that rush to upgrade to Nokia 900 atm to be honest since there is very little performance / camera difference between Lumia 900 and Lumia 800.

I always thought that the updating tiles on Windows phones were a lot like widgets on Android, only a little smaller than most widgets.

You also might not realize that widgets don't drain a lot of battery unless poorly written so they run when the phone is not being used. JuiceDefender fixes that issue nicely, however.
