Experiencing bad ping. Looking for solutions

I experience really bad ping spikes while playing online games only. The spike happens randomly and frequently which goes up to 1500ms, lasting for a while before gradually dropping back down. My download speed is 10mb and i can buffer online content fine but its during online sessions that this happens. i am using wifi and this happens even when im the only one using the bandwidth.

my computer is 20 ft away fr the router and a wall between the two on the same floor. running ethernet eliminates this problem but lets just say i am not allowed to do it for some reason. i have a few choices: does changing my stock router to a better one help (because of the interference)? or buy a powerline adapter?

what can i do the solve this problem?

I would scan your computer with a anti virus, I personally use http://www.superantispyware.com

I had the same issue as you a year or so ago and it was actually the sheer amount of cookies I had on my computer that was causing the lag spikes, Give your computer a quick scan and remove all the cookies it finds, I wouldn't be surprised if it found over 1000

Well that's the answer then, don't use WiFi if it's avoidable, which it obviously is in your case.

It's unlikely to be a virus or an accumulation of cookies since that would also affect ethernet connection.

And for the benefit of previous poster, SuperAntSpyware is not antivirus software.

i cant run an ethernet cable. not for where im living. are there any solutions besides that?

Try adding a WiFi range-extender to your setup, and wherever possible use the 5GHz wireless band as opposed to 2.5GHz - - 5GHz is less crowded and therefore less prone to interference from other routers nearby.

sounds like i need to change the router. it only has a 2.4 ghz band.

will installing a powerline adapter be any better over using a router that offers 5ghz band? my apartment runs a 3 phase eletrical system

Don't use wireless for online gaming. You essentially handicapping yourself.

I would try the powerline just buy them from a company you can return them. Unless money is a huge issue I would look at the latest ones based on av2 standard. This standard tends to work in many buildings where the older standard had trouble . Av2-1200 tplink units tend to get good results on most testing sites and for unknown reasons are on sale many times cheaper than the older av500 units.
