explain ATA100

i don't really know anything about ata100 but I have a diamondmax 5600rpm ata100 drive in the mail. I just wanted to confirm that this will work work with an intel vc820 mobo. and how good is this drive anyway? cuase it wasn't cheap =)

It should work with your motherboard, but I would have went for a 7200RPM drive if I was looking for IDE.

ATA/100 is backward compatible will any motherboard.
Though, you probably won't benefit at all from that high transfer speed because you drive runs only at 5400RPM.

In fact, most IDE drives cannot use at all that high transfer speed, because they are too slow. Except maybe the IBM deskstar. But still, I believe that UDMA/66 is more than enough.
