Ok, so I've been searching for a while this morning and I have not found the answer to my questions. I usually read up on my DIY projects, but frankly I am really stressed out right now and this is on my mind. Sorry to take the easy way out, but after 30 minutes on Google, I finally told myself, "Someone on Tom's Hardware could answer this in like 2 minutes..."

So, I have a 3500sqft house with full basement and a large chimney that blocks wifi signal. Here is what my naive/novice idea/plan is- I'd like to run ethernet cables from my computer on one side of my house and then be able to place new "locations" to get wifi from in the middle of the downstairs and on the other half of the upstairs.

That said, I don't even know if this is the best method, nor what I'd be buying. Questions are-

Do I put routers on the other end of the ethernet cables? Or is there something more simple?
Is there a cheaper option that will still give good performance? I figured that this would be a good compromise between cost and performance. I want a good signal. And running wires will be easy for me.
Would just getting a few wireless repeaters be as effective? Cost similar?

In the end, I'd like to crate strong signal across the top of my house, and in the center of the bottom. Whatever gets me there cheaply, works for me. When Googling this, I was hit with 1000 options. I get 60 mbps at my computer. Can get 40-50 from my wifi router if near it. Only get about 20 in my bedroom upstairs. Hoping to get that 40-50 throughout.

I appreciate all of your help ahead of time. I'm sure this will be simple for you guys.

I don't know... why not just get an actual access point???

Hence my thread. I'm clueless when it comes to networking stuff...

From what I read (which could be outdated) the MbPS is slower on the powerline setups than just running ethernet. I can easily run some ethernet through my attic.

If you have the option to use regular Cat5e or Cat6, do that.

In terms of performance, decreasing:
ethernet
powerline
WiFi

SO basically, you want WiFi access where it currently does not reack, right?

OK.
Run ethernet upstairs
Purchase a 10/100/1000 switch or two. $15 each
Purchase an Access Point.
Plug it all in

Yes, you can use a router, but you'd have to turn off most of the 'router' functions. In that case, why pay for stuff you cannot use.
An Access point is what you want.

1) Help me understand what the switch is for?
2)I could pick up a decent wifi router for $20 each. I may even have a buddy who could give me one. That said, which option would be cheaper, assuming that performance would be similar?

The switch might be for things you want wired, instead of WiFi only. Not required if you want WiFi only at the remote location.

Cheaper? Probably not a lot of difference.

See this for changing a 'router' into an Access Point.
How do I convert my wireless router to a wireless AP (Access Point)?
