Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I am wanting to get a couple of cases for IDE drives to be used outside my systems (so I can easily use them with other computers in the family, if I choose). For one thing, I would like just a hard drive, so I can have a duplicate copy of all the data on this computer.

Also, we bought an external DVD+R/+RW (for $99 after rebate) at Fry's and I want to be able to use it over here, or take it to my mom's as well, so I need a box. Preferably with both USB 2.0 and Firewire.

What are the recommendations and where is a good place to get them.

If you mean this stuff then I found it in some of the better stores locally. It is also available from "web" stores.

You can buy external drives right from the manufacturer but they will be more expensive than this solution and u can't swap them out.

Got a UML Technologies PM-525U2F from http://htcnetstore.com for $56. As the model number suggests, this is a 5.25 " enclosure with both USB2.0 and IEEE 1394. At least the Firewire is working as I put my Verbatim DVD+R+RW drive in and was able to open CD-ROMs on the computer. The computer I have it connected to is an eMachines T1090, so I don't know if it has USB2.0 or if just USB1.1 (would want the higher speed for burning DVDs), so I haven't yet tried it.

The DVD burner is 32x on the CD read. 32x150kBytes/s = 4800 kBytes/s, but USB1.1 is only 12 Mbps = 1.5 MBytes/s, so obviously I should be able to answer that question by seeing how fast it can copy a CD.

BTW, it has 2 Firewire ports and 1 USB2 port.
