External Monitor Unable to get 60hz+

Hello everyone I've just recently bought a monitor Asus vg248qe. And I want it connected to my laptop, which is a Asus ROG g750JM and i want 144hz from the monitor.

I have bought a cable which is mini display port -> DVI. The minidisplayport is connected to my computer and the DVI to the monitor. The cable is a Active Mini DisplayPort to Single Link DVI. In my research online this should do the trick, but i can only get 60hz from it. What have i missed?

Maybe the adapter is causing the loss of capability.

My laptop only has a mini displayport, that cable wouldn't work. What do you mean by full size dp?

But why does my "solution" not work? Display to DVI? Are you saying that mini display port to normal display port would work?
