I tried the suggestions here and elsewhere with my verbatim 3TB USB 3.0 external drive which I bought to use with Ubuntu 12.04.
Nothing worked however I had emailed verbatim with a request for help.
They replied and attached a windows executable which ran under Win 7 and did the job.
here is a link: https://app.box.com/s/h7xdyt5s0kyi70y87e81 to the file in case it helps anyone else.
Buteman's solution worked for me!!!! On the first try.
THANKS !!!!!!!
(this had been preventing me from using it for a few months now... I couldn't find an answer or solution...)

DETAILS:
Verbatim Store-n-Save 3TB SuperSpeed USB 3.0, Model number 97581.
Win7-64bit
Under Device Properties it says: ST33000651AS (so I get that it's a Seagate Barracuda XT, 7200-RPM, 64MB cache) 🙂
http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/barracuda-xt/

Right after running the Verbatim HD Mode Change software, here's what I now see:
- In Disk Management, it comes up as: 2794.39 GB (NTFS)
- In the Drive Properties, it says Used Space: 177 MB and: Free Space: 2.72 TB

Good luck everyone and thanks again!
(it's about time Verbatim gave us a solution... that was giving them a really bad reputation)

Could you please send the tools to me? I use also Verbatim 3TB model 047673, the firmware posted here does not work for my drive, saying the chip not found etc.
my email address is botoleo@Hotmail.com
Thank you.

Thank you very very much! I downloaded the file and modified my disk from slit mode to standard. Now I have a single disk in one partition. My disk is Verbatim 3TB model 047673. Thank you again!

I couldn't get the Mode Change Tool to do anything. Many tries, lots of googling. I'd point it at the F drive which was the first partition of the 3TB drive, click the button, and the window would change the drop down box to my D drive (a 1 TB USB 3.0 Verbatim).

I posted a request to Verbatim Support on Feb 21; they acknowledged receiving it and said they'd send me an ID and password; these have not arrived after almost 4 weeks. Pretty sucky support, at least for me! 🙁 :pfff:

Just now, it occurred to me to temporarily turn off the 1 TB drive. (!!!!) Guess what? The Mode Change Tool worked perfectly!

Perhaps there's a bug or design flaw in the Tool so it gets confused when there is another USB Verbatim drive attached?

I had also tried this Aussie tool without success.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the tool provided by Verbatim on the drive itself worked as soon as I temporarily turned off my other Verbatim USB drive.

Thanks for taking the time to search and to post!
