Buteman's solution worked for me!!!! On the first try.September 9, 2013 6:52:07 AM

I tried the suggestions here and elsewhere with my verbatim 3TB USB 3.0 external drive which I bought to use with Ubuntu 12.04.
Nothing worked however I had emailed verbatim with a request for help.
They replied and attached a windows executable which ran under Win 7 and did the job.
here is a link: https://app.box.com/s/h7xdyt5s0kyi70y87e81 to the file in case it helps anyone else.
THANKS !!!!!!!
(this had been preventing me from using it for a few months now... I couldn't find an answer or solution...)
DETAILS:
Verbatim Store-n-Save 3TB SuperSpeed USB 3.0, Model number 97581.
Win7-64bit
Under Device Properties it says: ST33000651AS (so I get that it's a Seagate Barracuda XT, 7200-RPM, 64MB cache) 🙂

Right after running the Verbatim HD Mode Change software, here's what I now see:
- In Disk Management, it comes up as: 2794.39 GB (NTFS)
- In the Drive Properties, it says Used Space: 177 MB and: Free Space: 2.72 TB
Good luck everyone and thanks again!
(it's about time Verbatim gave us a solution... that was giving them a really bad reputation)
