After fiddling around quite a bit more, I fixed the original issue though. Jmicron provides firmware updates for the JMS539 chip inside the Verbatim case. I don't know if Verbatim just shipped an older version or a modified version, but after the update, the drive can be formatted as one large partition. The updates can be found here: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/jmicron.htm

I bought two 3TB Verbatim USB disks today, both showing the "two device" symptom. Noonian Soong's solution did it!

By the way, I found some more recent firmware upgrades on this site: http://www.x-drivers.com/catalog/bios_firmware/usb_controllers/companies/jmicron/models/jms539/index.html

Finally, Verbatim support was right in one respect: Atfer the firmware upgrade I had to convert the disk from MBR to GPT in order to create the 3TB partitions.

Let's all enjoy the >2TB age!

Sorry for the late response; the notification email was caught by an overzealous spam filter. I would be glad to post a full tutorial, but my previous post is a full tutorial already. All I did was the firmware update and the disk was recognized as one drive. At what point exactly are you stuck on?

I was made fw upgrade on my Verbaim 47662 model external hard disk with Hitachi hdd inside, and now on my XP machines I can see only one device with 2tb size.

Did somebody know original version of the firmware, or can make me a copy of original factory fw to post it here for download.

Unfortunately every firmware posted on these thread did not help.

Thanks in advanced!

Windows XP cannot see a drive larger than 2TB, unless the LBA size is greater than 512 bytes. I'd search for a driver that can mount GPT partitions on an Win XP box.

This looks to be a solution for Hitachi drives:
http://www.paragon-software.com/hitachi/

I know that but when I first time connect drive I was seen the two device, one with 2tb and one with 1tb.

After applying the firmware I can see only one drive with 2tb and the second is not showed any more.

So I need an original fw to make the factory settings back.

Tnx!

You should be able to simply create two partitions, maybe with a LiveCD that will see the whole drive. The disk should work just fine then.

I've got what seems to be an updated model, #47673 and unfortunately the linked jmicron firmware reported that it was not a jmicron controller or did not recognize it.

The device id is: 0x18A5:0x0400

Also tried some ASMedia firmware utilities on a hunch from other devices that were using their controller, but that wasn't recognized either.

I also tried smartmontools that reports unrecognized USB bridge.

So i'm stuck with the factory sizings. Inside the box is a bloody big note saying it will appear as two drives, had it appeared outside the box i would have walked away.

Has anybody got any idea how to identify the controller without voiding warranty?

If you install Verbatim's "Green Button" energy saving software, can you see any clues inside the files? It could be that this software is provide by the bridge manufacturer rather than by Verbatim themselves.

Thanks for the suggestion, i confess i had enough and returned the drive without much fuss from where i bought it - i figured there wasn't much to be learned from the experience, and having been up to after 3am, had felt I'd spent too much time already.

after returning the drive i got an email back from verbatim support, they gave me an application (from freecom!) to change the mode on the drive to operate as a single device. Another purchase from the shop (got the same unit in the same box which had been put back on the shelf - even though i'd wiped the disks!), got it all working ok now.... why they don't ship this on the drive with the other software, or on their website is beyond me.

Please, can anyone help?

Ive tried every single tool from the freecom website, but nothing seemed to be compatible.
Perhaps anyone knows how to identify the chip that ist used inside the verbatim Case?!

Did you see this post earlier in the thread and check out the JMicron drivers at the linked page?

Ofcourse, i tried every update from the station driver website and from freecom.
But nothing worked.

Ive tried to ask the verbatim Support or ruidc directly for help, but they arent answering.

Noonian Soong's solution does NOT work with the new Verbatim 3TB. The firmware updater says that it cannot find a Jmicron chip in the hard-disk. I send a support email to Verbatim, asking them if they could send me a firmware update to solve the two-devices problem, and that I don't mind voiding the warranty, but it's been two weeks now, and still no reply from them whatsoever. I can't believe I spent $240 for this.

To anyone reading this, AVOID BUYING Verbatim 3TB. I had respect for this company, but it's all over now.

Ok, had the same problem with my Store `n`save 3tb. After asking the verbatim support ( support.de@verbatim-europe.com ), they send me a pretty tool that solved all my problems. The Verbatim mode change tool gives you the choice for creating two seperate partitions (2 disks as the factory settings), an emulation mode (no booting or fat32 possible) or, finally the option to create one single disk an partition with 3tb in GPT mode. The only thing I asked myself in this case is: why the can`t they upload this 1.25 mb tool on their website and make everybody happy. :pfff:
So, if you have this issue on your disk, just write an e- mail to them, they send me the tool from 8pm to 10am in the next morning

they send me a pretty tool that solved all my problems.

I have nothing personal against the poster above me, but unless I see with my own eyes this tool he's talking about, I consider him a COMPLETE LIAR. This whole thread exists precisely because of Verbatim's failure to provide this tool. I have been waiting for a month now without any reply from them, and I refuse to believe that the poster above me MIRACULOUSLY got what every other person couldn't get, AS IF TOUCHED BY DIVINE GRACE. If the said poster wants to prove me wrong, he can send me a private message with the URL to this tool, and I will be happy to amend myself and to present him publicly my excuses. But otherwise, I stand by my accusations.

@readonlymaio: Thank you, thank you, thank you! Can't thank you enough. You're a life-saver. Finally, this problem is solved, and I can move on with my work. @Anonymous: I take back the nasty things I said to you. You weren't a liar after all, but still, it wasn't nice of you to leave people behind, after being in the same situation. @everyone else: If ever the link becomes invalid, send me a private message. I have a copy of the tool ready.

Ok, after having the same issue and reading as far as half of this thread, and then googling on it a bit more, i found the solution i believe you've already found.

Its DARN simple with the Verbatim tool (only question is: why the f*** don't they have this tool available on any other site than their Austrailian one? I mean...come on!

The solution, which is DEAD easy with this little app (no installation needed, just download it and run, and 3 minutes later when you have you're ONCE SINGLE 3tb working drive, then just throw it away...though i've actually saved the zipped app on my NAS for future use if i run into the same problem and Verbatim is crazy enough to take it down from its Australian website too). Its called:

"3tb partition changer"

Its only a 900kb download. (THANK GOD Verbatim's Australian site isn't one of those "You cannot download this blablabla from you're location" (i.e. if you don't have an IP address from inside Australia or something).

Anyway, just download that tool from here:

http://www.verbatim.com.au/en_AU/products/hard-drives/desktop/47673/3-5-store-n-save-desktop-hard-drive-usb-3-0-3tb/drivers

You'll get a zip-file called "Verbatim 3TB Mode Change Tool 1.15.zip" (as i said, only a 900kb download). Put it on your desktop or wherever, extract it, and start up the "Verbatim Mode Change Tool.exe" (again, as i said: no installation required, just launch the app). From there you have three options:

Standard Mode
Emulation Mode
Split Mode

(I'm guessing the factory default IS "Split mode").

Anyway, just choose the first option - Standard Mode - and you're 3tb disk will be changed from 2 partitions/drives (i.e. one 2tb and one 760gb) to one single 3tb partition/drive (and the drive letter for ONE of the two partitions/drives will disappear as "its space" is added to the other drive letter).

Thats it, it takes a minute and you're done! No need to change the drive from MBR to GPT etc or anything.

BE AWARE THOUGH THAT THIS PROCESS DOES ERASE ALL YOUR DATA FROM ANY OF THE TWO "PARTITIONS".

(It will also pop-up an option saying "There are Verbatim files on this drive. Do you want to delete them?" and a Yes or No option...i'm always damned sure to say "YES, GET RID OF THE DAMN THING!" when that pops up, heh.)

And then just let it do its magic, it takes a minute or so, "merging" the two "drives" and formatting it to NTFS. (Its ofcourse a "Quick Format", otherwise it would take alot longer, but once you're done "merging" the two drives (and - as i recommend - removing the "Verbatim files" on the drive - you can then just format it to whatever file system you like, i.e. a "non-quick" NTFS format if you're really "picky"(it IS supposed to be a new drive after all, so i see no reason for that).

I hope this is "tutorial" enough and will solve everyone's problem. (Though as i said i didn't read all the way to the bottom of this thread, so this app might probably have been suggested a long time ago...if so - i'm sorry.)

Addendum:
This little app does actually work with many other "brands" of external HDDs partitioned this way, so if you have a different 3tb external drive and have the same problem, this little program is definitely worth a shot.

And again - its darn strange that this little app is not available for download on any other site than Verbatim's AUSTRALIAN site...or that the European support can't even point to it when you email them about this "problem".

Well, anyway, problem solved i believe.

/piccioni

OK, so i see poeple have already found this little app, never mind my post...

Well done guys. Performed this firmware update on an Aereon Transimp enclosure with the same Chipset and straight away all going well!!!

I just ran in the same problem. Solution:
Google for Verbatim 3TB Partition Changer
-->
http://www.verbatim.com.au/en_AU/products/hard-drives/desktop/47673/3-5-store-n-save-desktop-hard-drive-usb-3-0-3tb/drivers/asset/8231

I tried the suggestions here and elsewhere with my verbatim 3TB USB 3.0 external drive which I bought to use with Ubuntu 12.04.
Nothing worked however I had emailed verbatim with a request for help.
They replied and attached a windows executable which ran under Win 7 and did the job.
here is a link: https://app.box.com/s/h7xdyt5s0kyi70y87e81 to the file in case it helps anyone else.
