Question Extra memory only sort of recognised on P9x79

I added a couple of sticks of 8Gb memory to my motherboard recently.
I already had 4 sticks of 4Gb in slots A1, B1, C1, and D1, and I added the two new sticks to B2 and D2 as the manual suggested, but instead of the total memory increasing by 16Gb, it only went up by 4Gb.
The BIOS manages to list the contents of each slot correctly, but also shows the Total Memory as 20480Mb which obviously doesn't add up to the sum of the slots.
Any ideas?

What happens if you use just the two 8GB sticks?

Stick A in slot D1: works - total memory shows 8Gb
Stick B in slot D1: works - total memory shows 8Gb
Stick A in slot B1 and Stick B in slot D1: only the stick in D1 shows in the BIOS - total memory 8Gb
Stick A in slot D1 and Stick B in slot B1: machine doesn't even get to POST

Swap them over again, back to Stick A in slot B1 and Stick B in slot D1: DRAM list in BIOS correct as in both showing filled with 8Gb but the Total Memory also says 8Gb rather than 16Gb.

If you have xmp enabled turn it off....test.
Clear the cmos....test.
Do you have the proper bios for your mobo?

XMP was not on, however AI Overclock Tuner was set to Manual, so I reset it to Auto. Upon booting the POST reported "Overclocking failed! Please enter Setup to re-configure your system." which seemed pretty odd.
BIOS still showed slots B1 and D1 filled with 8Gb each, and the total memory still at 8Gb.
I have just noticed that the SPD information for B1 is listed as Abnormal.

BIOS version is 4701, not quite the latest, but the 4801 version is labelled as a beta (still).

Have swapped the sticks over again, and suddenly all seems well. Total memory 16Gb, SPD information says both slots are OK. What the actual <Mod Edit>.
