Guys,

I am going to microcenter this afternoon to get my parts for my i7 920 build. My question is what extras should I buy that are needed on the build. I know the main parts mobo, cpu etc, but what about the little things...the cpu paste, ties, etc. It is about an hour drivec so I cant just run out and get something I might find out I need. I have a computer screwdriver kit, but thats it. Thanks guys

Scott

Ok, the bare minimal parts for a pc:

CPU - i7 920
RAM - DDR3 3X2GB 1066/1333Mhz
MOBO - X58
CASE - ATX
PSU - ATX 500W+ Antec, Enermax, Fortron, OCZ, Sparkle
GPU
HDD - 500GB - 1TB

The cpu comes with a stock cooler with thermal paste on the bottom. No need to get more. The case comes with all the screws & standoffs for a basic build. You can use your screwdriver kit for the build. Lay parts out on newspaper or books or magazines. Def. not on carpets/beds. Close the door. No pets allowed.

If you're getting 2 or more harddisks, you may need more screws. You could get by with 2 screws on the furthest ends of each side of the hdd. 4 would be best. Just check the pictures at newegg.com for the screws of the case you plan to buy.

Most everthing you need comes in one of the boxes you buy. For example, as long as you're not needing a lot of SATA cables, you should have enough with the ones that come with the mobo. If you're planning on overclocking, you should get an aftermarket CPU cooler and thermal paste. If not, don't bother. It's also rare for the case not to include enough screws for the number of HDDs it supports. I've still got a whole bag of miscellaneous metal parts for my case that will probably never be used.

Everything else is not really necessary. I found that my Corsair PSU came with zip ties for cable management, but I didn't even end up using them. Besides the actual components, very few of the extra parts will have to come from Microcenter. Screws, zip ties, some cables and other small parts can be found elsewhere...

I recently put together my first custom build (i7-860) about 1.5 months ago. I too wasn't sure what extra to get and ended up buying a lot of extra stuff I didn't need.

Screws - my case (Antec 300) came with so many extra Hard Drive screws, I don't know what to do with them now 😉

SATA Cables - bought two, MoBo came with two (but I do like the ones I got from Newegg better, with the clip on one end).

IDE Cable - it came with one, which I knew, but I bought one that is rounded, rather than the old style fat wire.

Thermal Paste - bought Artic Silver, not knowing my Thermaltake ISGC-300 CPU Cooler came with some.

Zip Ties - either my case or PSU came with them, but I didn't use them.

So, like others have said, you should have most of the 'extras' you'll need. Plus, if you forget something major, you can always order it from NewEgg...
