I have a Dimension 8300. Great PC. I am considering purchasing a
Dimension XPS Generation 4 refurbished. My 8300 was refurbished also.
My Dimension 8300 has the 800 FSB and is a 3.0. Is the Extreme Edition
(3.46GHz, 1066 FSB) that much faster then the 8300?

Not a "huge" difference. An 8400 with a 3.4 would be a better value.

I would buy an 8400 with the newer a 3.4 Pentium® 4 650 Processor.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll consider the 8400 but is it much
faster then my 8300.

No, it isn't, but neither is the XPS. You're 8300 is still pretty much
state of the art.

At this moment in time, I'd take an 8300 comparably spec'd over the 8400
myself.

Why? The 8400 is a sweet system. No faster than an 8300 but a very nice
system!

Like I'm gonna bash the 8400 knowing that you have one ;-)

It's just a matter of personal preference is all. Mostly to do with the 925
(and 915 for that matter) chipset.

I'll also go on record to say that your machine is nicer than anything I'm
currently running.

Why is that (seriously)?

From the (CPU) socket configuration to what I see as the general instability
of DDR2 and SATA controllers when coupled with the 925 chipset - along with
the minimal to nominal performance gains over the 875 chipset is all.

I've posted before that these particular systems had several aggressive
advancements all on one board/chipset comparitively and were (in my opinion)
less well-behaved than the 875 predecessor.

If I were building another gamer right now, it'd likely be an AMD64 based
system or a top-end P4/478/875 unit.

Not trying to be alarmist or sway anyone to worry.

Thanks to all who replied. I guess I will keep my great 8300. No
problems with it, includes not installing the SP2 - I don't use MS'
browser and have no problems. Seems some are having problems with their
16 bit programs by loosing the autoexec.nt file after installing SP2.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. 🙂
