[SOLVED] Extreme Packet Loss/Ping Spikes

The past 2 years I have been having extreme ping spikes/packet loss in league( I don't know which one). Help me please! I usually use Wi-Fi but have tried powerline adapters niether work( no possible way to get ethernet to this pc)

You have to run lots of pings to see it can be tracert just got unlucky that time.

You have to be very careful about how you use these tools. Remember if you see no issue to the end node then anything in between is a lie. As I stated in a previous post the routers in the path are designed to pass traffic not respond to ping/trace. They will delay or not respond at all if they are busy passing traffic.

Your problem can also be the game telling lies. If a ping command shows good ping times and no loss but a game says something else you have determine who is telling lies. Ping is a very simple command. Games will send a ping request the response can return be placed in a buffer. If the game is busy doing something else...

Ok I tested on Ethernet and I figured some things out. Sorry I can't provide ss but I'll explain. After 1500 sent on WinMTR with my PC plugged into router, packet loss and ping we're low except for everything. The hop at 209.181.128.2 was reporting 7% packet loss and an average ping of 700. I figured it may be a faulty hop or bad routing so I decided to ping the server. After pinging 100 times with cmd I have 0% packet loss. I'm so confused plz help

Edit: by low ping and packet loss I mean 0% and <100
 
You have to be careful about how you interpret loss. Lets say hop5 was broken and discarded all traffic. This means you would also lose all data to hop 6 because it was damaged at hop 5. If you see data going to hop 6 then it means hop 5 is not actually discarding the traffic.

Routers in the network are designed to favor passing actual data and responding to ping and tracert is secondary. They will delay response or not respond at all if they are busy do useful work like passing user data. Many also have a limit on how much they will respond because you can denial of service attack the cpu in a router by sending it too much ping traffic.

Pretty much if you get no loss with ethernet it means it is the wifi. This is a extremely common issue. Wifi is designed to retransmit lost traffic which takes time and causes delays in packets. Games use the consistent delay to sync your position in the game. The technology are fundamentally opposed so wifi will not work well unless you never get interference which is impossible now days.

There is little you can do on wifi. You change the radio channels, maybe try the other radio frequency 2.4 or 5, set the channel width to 20mhz. Likely none of these will work. Used to be where you could find radio bandwidth that nobody else was using. Now all your neighbors likely have at least 1 wifi router if not a whole house full of silly mesh units.

Poweline units work better for most people for games. The newer av2 units work better than the older av200 and av500. Still there are those houses that have issues.

Not sure you are running out of options. Moca is pretty much that last technology other than running actual ethernet. You need tv coax in both rooms and can't have directtv or some of the whole house dvr using the cables.

Ok sorry I'm a little late to replying but even on powerline I get less than 1% packet loss to my modem and still experience a lot of lag. The only other thing that I can think of is that weird hop with bad ping(although idk I don't meet the requirements to make a diagnosis). Also can you explain why pinging the server replies with a ping under 20 and a 0% packet loss but the traceroute reports packet loss and 700 ping. ty

Which makes it harder to diagnose.

Also Wifi is not so great for gaming, never has been, so Ethernet cable is always best.

Your problem can also be the game telling lies. If a ping command shows good ping times and no loss but a game says something else you have determine who is telling lies. Ping is a very simple command. Games will send a ping request the response can return be placed in a buffer. If the game is busy doing something else it will wait to retreive the data from the buffer. What they tend to do it use the time they took the data out of the buffer rather than when the data was placed in the buffer. So if the game is say stuck in a video driver it will add this time to the response when really the data was there well before.

To be realistic it does not really matter. I would leave a constant ping run to your router and to hop2 or hop3. It almost looks like you have 2 routers in your house. The only thing in the path you can get the ISP to fix is the connection from your house to the ISP. That will be hop3 I think. If you do not see the large ping spikes in this connection what can you do. Lets say the problem is in level3 network or riot network its not like you can call them up and open a ticket. You are not their customer.

So I would test very carefully with the ping command to see if the loss is real or if the game is telling lies. You then need ping to the router in your house with no loss or delays but you see delays to the ISP router. The ISP should fix this. Here again it is critical that you use ethernet to test. If you get even the slightest loss in the first hops they will blame all the loss on the wifi or the powerline units.
