Are you saying with max settings you never go below 30 and you don’t get any lag? I’m wondering if were on the same page to what we call acceptable game play. I can play the game at high detail too, but when I face off with a bot or two my FPS drop down under the 30’s. Even the 6800 had times it dropped down to 22 and 33, so yeah I wonder how you can top that.
I just started the game and so far made it to the boat, but the lag in there and fighting the guys right out side has caused me to stop playing the game. Like wait for a new video card. Maybe if I keep going the lag won’t be so bad, but I’m thinking it will once I come in contact with a bot. If the game isn’t smooth I find it hard to enjoy. Maybe I’m just use to UT.

Why do you need to play at max settings?

I think you'll find that with lighting set to very high (Pixel Shader 2.0) and environment set to medium you'll find the game looks at least 90% as good, but plays very smoothly.

I agree with medium settings, just turn the res up to overcome the non-antialiased graphics. At least that's what i'm doing, i'm running at medium at 1280x1024, very smooth, never below 35.

Max settings would be nice, but I’ll settle for 90% and smooth play :wink: . Thanks. I have tried some settings changes, what a pain to have to start the game over every time gees. I’ll try upping the res and lower the AA and some other settings and see if I can actually start getting somewhere in the game. Don’t know where the post is, but Slava also said to lower the particle count. Will updating my driver help? I tried 4.4, but UT acted up, which usually is ok when I turn the vertical sync to always on, but not with the 4.4 driver, so I went back to 3.8. Maybe try 4.3?

I am not quite sure how you can take this personally, unless you were one of the game developers. I only responded because I happen to think the game is loads of fun and anyone who enjoyed the demo will surely like the game. I think some of us just wanted to make it clear as to not mislead people and have them avoid the game from this review. No personal attacks meant at all, just surprised to hear someone say it isn't any fun. But even so, it's important to let it be known if you happen to find it to be a fun game. My advice is try the demo, if you like it, the retail game will give you 20 more hours of that same fun through a variety of levels. Plus multiplayer and an editor are included, so maybe some mods will be on there way soon too.

It is a fun experience teaching a classroom of students when 5 out of your 30 students are talking, and you say, "Hey, guys, be quiet." Then, when the five that were talking stop and look at you, the other 25 students, in unison, act all pissed off and say, "I wasn't talking!"

So if you are a poster who writes worthwhile, yet respectful remarks, it is OK to assume that the comment was not directed toward you...

Besides, people often respond to a higher post by clicking on the bottom post...

re read the post you drunken fool. It don't even work with a joy stick.

If I glanced at a spilt box of tooth picks on the floor, could I tell you how many are in the pile. Not a chance, But then again I don't have to buy my underware at Kmart.

====== URGENT =======

=== ERROR DETECTED!!! ====

I decided to try Far Cry at “Easy” difficulty and in the process I discovered a mistake in my original post about this game’s performance! To correct this, I made changes to the original review.

I am very sorry that I mislead you guys.

Here’s what was incorrect: I do get the frame rates I posted BUT the graphics settings are NOT all “High”. The original post said that everything was set to “High” except Particle Count which was set to “Medium”. This is wrong. In addition to Particle count, Shadows, Special Effects and Water are also set to Medium. Everything else is, indeed, at High and Texture Filter Quality (which I did not mention at all in the original post) is Trilinear.

I made this mistake because initially I did use all “High” settings with 2xAA, 4xAF, etc. but the frame rate was not very good It was 24-38 FPS rather than 40+ FPS and I toned a few things down but somehow I forgot about it when I wrote that review.

Once again, I am sorry, I hope no one ran out and bought FX5700 Ultra 128 DDR2 just based on my review of its performance in Far Cry. It is still a great cheap card though - almost as good as 9800Pro but when I bought it it was 70 bucks cheaper (not sure what the current prices are).

Awesome link! Thanks! Love FiringSquad.

However, at the first glance the frame rates seemed exaggerated to me. So I looked closer at how they tested.

They benchmarked walking on a map with no action. The game does not work like that: there’s AI animation, smoke, fire, etc.. Theirs are not the real gameplay frame rates users should expect when actually playing. It seems to me that while the FS article accurately depicts relative power of various Radeon cards it may mislead users who may think that they can play FC with R9800XT at 1600x1200 with everything at Very High and and still get playable FPS.

actually i agree with slava..

Once u get past the graphical WOW factor the game kinda fades as there doesnt seem to be an incentive to keep playing....

i also have an audigy 2 and the sound in the game doesnt interest me at all..

personally i still rate CoD as the best shooter there is as that was one game that grabbed me and MADE me play to the end... Farcry is like a girl that looks pretty but has no personality.....

Can you fill me in about the P/S 2.0 setting? Is it something we have to set to and if so where. I did a search, but it just led to this thread. Is it something to do with Direct X and already in use if you have the latest Direct X? Clueless…… By the way the game looks pretty good and is pretty smooth at medium settings and medium AA at 1024x768. About 50-100 FPS. I tried 1280x1024 and no AA, but with not as good FPS, though not going below 35 and maybe as high as 75. Slava is right Not being able to save has me starting over and over. I do have it on medium skill though.

Pixel Shader 2.0. All DX9x cards I know of support it. My FX5700U supports it for sure. If I understand correctly P/S has to do with how light and shadows are rendered for each pixel. If I am correct, full use of P/S 2.0 in FC would entail running it with Lighting quality set to Very High...

That’s why Cleeve said to set lighting to very high, thanks. I think that setting was hitting my FPS pretty hard, I’ll have to read up and check out the difference. Thanks again.

awnn Slava here is a whiner because he spent 39.99 on a game he doesn't like? do we give a rat's ass? NOOOO

With a little help I’m actually playing the game now. I’m still in aw over the graphics and hope this is a sign for things to come. It’s no MOHAA, but I’m having fun and blowing holes in the bots and watching them jump is cool, lol. I’d have some spending money if I had my money back for all the games I didn’t like or didn’t finish. Example: I still haven’t finished Call of Duty, since my kid started the game and lost my spot and I was playing on a harder level. Hmm, NFP Underground, cool game played that one or two nights. Delta Force, seems ok, one to two nights there. Midnight Club, Battlefield 1942, MOHAA SpearHead, also only a few nights of play. I have Max Payne, SOFII and a few other games I played like once or twice and never went back to. I might buy one game and then by another before I even finish the first, if I even go back to playing the first. Come to think of it I didn’t even finish the demo to Farcry.

You are mistaken. And though I normally ignore rude people like you I will have you know that I make a lot of money and I buy a lot of games. I don't "give a rat's ass" about $39.99. But bad games piss me off. That's all. Don't bother to respond. All further messages from you will be ignored, unless you apologize for your tone.

But what convinced me not to buy was no joy stick support. That just bites... I hate keyboard games too cumbersome for my liking.

FPS with a joystick? That's the most pathetic thing I've heard in a long time. How did you pick up that wacko habit?
