I haven't had a chance to install it as i spent time here jabbering instead tonight. I found on the demo, Xp2500+ @ 3200+, 512MB PC3200, Overclocked GF4Ti4200, that 1024x768 medium was a bit too choppy to really enjoy. Of course I had been playing it on a R9800 pro before that, so maybe i got spoiled.

That said, i don't think the GF4MX (mentioned earlier) has a chance at 1024x768 medium settings. Not at real enjoyable fps/smoothness. I'd say 8x6 med/low on that GF4MX.

No! Paulh, say it so! Well i'm going to download it as soon as i get my pc back (new case woo!) so will let you all know how it runs around the 4th, maybe a little earlier. Thing is, I know everyone says the gf4 mx440 is shite, but its not that bad really - I don't mind turning the detail down, as long as i run at 1024, cos 8x6 is too old school for me. I havent used it since the old 350mhz p2 days, and when i bought my pc 2 years ago, i vowed never to get to the point where i would need 8x6. Looks like a 9600xt is on the cards when i can scrape the cash together.

don't forget a Ti4200 has VS/PS capability, so the game will go down that codepath which may be a lot more taxing on the poor ol' Ti4200 than it's comfortable with.

So it might run a lot better on the MX than you think, as it's simply not bothering with the shader stuff - it's DX7 class hardware really. nowhere near as pretty though, of course.

I hate playing at a res less than 1024x768 myself. I remember first time I played half-life was at 400x300, using software rendering 😱 ... That's just totally unacceptable to my eyeballs these days.

how much cash you got available? My 9800Pro was only about £160 shipped. and this game sure looks sweet on it

Well right now, no money :) Student, waiting for the lloan to come thru :)

Realistically, I wont be in a position to buy before these new R420s or NV40s come out, so the 9800 pro may be a possibility by then. If yoou don't mind me asking, where did you find a 9800p for #160? 😱

I think I bought it from here..

I was a bit wary at first, as it's the 'Lite' version, and I've heard plenty about some manufacturers shipping cards with the core @ 9800Pro speeds but the memory clocked very low, but after some research it seemed that with Sapphire the 'Lite' is simply referring to the included software bundle - you get a drive disk and sod all else (fine by me! they always include crap old games anyway!), and as my sig attests, it's quite happily running at well beyond XT speed now, so it certainly seems to be a PRO to me!

I've bought quite a lot of stuff from that site, and not had any problems as of yet.

Of course the 980Pros might drop a bit more on release of the next gen cards, but £160 is already very cheap, so I don't know if any cards will drop below that price.

I just had a look around, and overclockers.co.uk has it for similar price, 155 i think. I'm gonna keep my eye on this one, it looks a great deal.

Never owned a Ti4200. it was OK on my 4600 (though not quite as smooth as I'd like). I was just responding to someone saying it wasn't that good on their 4200 so would be awful on the Gf4 MX.

It's just I've played it on a geforce1, and it wasn't that pretty, but had a playable framerate.

I bought stuff from overclockers.co.uk in the past, but when I sent them a query regarding an issue I was having placing an order, the guy's response was something like:
"huh? no-one else has said anything, the problem must be yours."
Which was more than unhelpful enough for me. I was going to spend something like £100 with them that time, and I'd already spent something like £700 in the past, but that attitude suggested they didn't want my money, and I went elsewhere and haven't bothered buying anything from them since.

There's so many websites to buy stuff from that customer service should really be more of a priority, if you ask me.

Well, I will try to download the demo tonight. My system is currently a regular GF3 (can go Ti500 levels), 512 PC3200, Epox 8KHA+ and Barton XP at 1666Mhz (133*12.5 but if necesary I can overclock to 2GHz 150*13,5)

At least this weekend I will play a couple of hours and I will tell you the result ... I don't expect a lot 🙁

Still looking for a good online retailer in Spain :frown:

True enough. I used to swear by novatech.co.uk, but now they've messed up a couple of my orders, and a mate's pc, when they gave him a lot of trouble before even admitting the problem was their fault, and took weeks to sort it out. These days I mainly shop at watford.co.uk - its pretty cheap and really quick delivery, so no complaints.

I'm thinking that a computer fair might be a good plan to find an intermediate card, possibly a 4200 or 4600 Ti, as they seem absolutely rock solid.

Yeah my 4600 served me well. The sad thing of course is that it was top of the line when I bought it, so cost about £300, IIRC.. I'm not paying that much for a card again.

I only got rid of it because it just wasn't smooth in Deus Ex:IW. All those bitching about Far Cry's performance should try that - Far cry is IMO graphically far superior to DX:IW, but actually runs much better on a GF4 Ti card..

never heard of watford.co.uk. I'll check them out, thanks.

Mainly I buy from:
overclock.co.uk
komplett.co.uk
and good old dabs.com is always ok.

I didn't consider the Ti4200 might be working harder rendinering more. Sure, fraps shows a decent average fps at 1024x768 med on my OC'ed Ti4200, but it isn't at all what i'd consider smooth. The low spots are low, the highs are high. I tried it a bunch and really found farcry a letdown on my Ti4200. If I hadn't been playing it on a R9800 Pro alot before that, Maybe I'd be thrilled with the Ti4200's farcry look/speed. But the differences are huge IMO.

I also can't imagine reverting back to 800x600 as honestly I like 1280x1024 like my desktop. But I can handle turning things down to 1024x768 if need be.

I am totally impressed so far. The game chose 1024x768/ medium on a 2.4GHz OCed mobile XP2500+ and a 400/360 radeon 9800 Pro. I was a bit ticked at that. I then remembered I had the ATI drivers set for 2X/8X AA/AF. I changed them to blend defaults, reconfigured and auto detect still picked the same settings. But I swalled my pride and kept it there; Also used FRAPs while playing. Game looked beatiful and framerates never dropped below 65. Probably averaged over 100fps easily, and was even close to 200 at times. Definately need to adjust the settings for a bit more visual droolness.

Ah, is it me or does this play smoother than the demo? I seriously didn't have 1 hickup in the 45 minutes I played. Honestly not once. wow? Either it's the retail game or the fact I now have 1GB of Ram instead of the 512MB I ran the demo with. But I did run the demo at 1024 high most of the time, so I'll have to do more testing once I boost the details.

Anyway, I'm very pleased so far. Back where you first get the gun, I found it alot of fun just seeing what you can do in it. Like knocking over shelves and standing them up again. or shaking the shelves and watching soda cans drop to the floor with a realistic sound too. Just like the demo, but even better so far. Much smoother too. I'll be curious to try it on a 512MB ram system to see if there is a difference.

Anyone read the faq. Them there are some steep system recomendations/requirements.

It's your gig of ram. High quality with only 512 megs of ram is just ridiculous. I know this because I bought an extra 512 megs just to get rid of all that pausing.

You can check for yourself by running task manager while playing. With 512 megs on very high quality, I had 10 megs free. With 1GB, I have about 250 megs free...thats nearly 800 megs of ram the game is using!

I have 512Mb of RAM myself, and it's fine. A bit of chugging the first time you're on a level, but after that it's fine.

I think the main reason is that I'm still running 98SE, which has a MUCH smaller RAM footprint than XP does, so I've probably got a good 100Mb extra compared to if I was running XP.

I would like to get 1Gb, but then I'd need to get XP and go through all the pain of re-installing everything 😱 and I just can't be arsed at the moment.

Thanks for the answer. that will be fun to try. Amazing what the suggested cpu/ram/GPU is for that game. It sure is worth it though.
