Recently I've been having issues with my current PC. I've had my computer for roughly 3 years and I believe my PSU is starting to die but I'm not sure.

I bought a pre-built from CyberPowerPC(I know, lol) and it ran pretty well for roughly 2 years and I started noticing problems turning on my PC. I have to press the power button multiple times before I can actually power my PC on. Aside from that I never had any additional issues until now.

Basically any time I play modded 2k Skyrim (or just put my GPU on heavy load) my entire computer would shut down in a weird way. My monitors would go dark, showing that I have no signal, my fans will spin high (sometimes they'll spin normally) and my computer becomes completely unresponsive aside from the soundcard. I've been playing Skyrim for roughly 2 years and I bought my graphics card around 6 months ago.

My specs:

CPU: i5 3570k Intel
GPU: 1070GTX NVIDIA
RAM: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665Mhz
PSU: Xtreme Gear 600W
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technlogy: B75M-D3H
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

I don't think it's a heating issue since my temps would be well below the critical range when it happens. Also the shutdown happened even when my computer was switching to Skyrim while it was opened in the background for at least 10 mins. (Skyrim doesn't stress the GPU when using borderless fullscreen)

At this point, I really think it's my PSU. I've heard all kinds of terrible things about Xtreme Gear and my GPU still works fine with other games. However it's just heavy load that causes it to do this. I even bought a new PSU that should be here tomorrow (CORSAIR CXM series CX750M 750W)

At the present, your best option is to install the new PSU and sort of trust that your computer returns to normal.

PSU problems can manifest with all sorts of strange, disruptive system behavior.

Good chance that your Event Viewer logs are full of error codes and warnings. Take a look, but barring any specific, consistent pattern related to the problems you see, just swap out the PSU.

Then clear the Event Viewer logs and watch for problems, if any.

Checking Event Viewer right now and I see two odd events when it happened.

First this:
ACPI thermal zone ACPI\ThermalZone\TZ01 has been enumerated.
_PSV = 379K
_TC1 = 1
_TC2 = 5
_TSP = 1000ms
_AC0 = 0K
_AC1 = 0K
_AC2 = 0K
_AC3 = 0K
_AC4 = 0K
_AC5 = 0K
_AC6 = 0K
_AC7 = 0K
_AC8 = 0K
_AC9 = 0K
_CRT = 379K
_HOT = 0K

Then this
ACPI thermal zone ACPI\ThermalZone\TZ00 has been enumerated.
_PSV = 0K
_TC1 = 0
_TC2 = 0
_TSP = 0ms
_AC0 = 358K
_AC1 = 328K
_AC2 = 273K
_AC3 = 273K
_AC4 = 273K
_AC5 = 0K
_AC6 = 0K
_AC7 = 0K
_AC8 = 0K
_AC9 = 0K
_CRT = 379K
_HOT = 0K

Keep in mind, the whole time I looked at my PC temps while this was happening and I was well below the critical range (CPU was around 65°C and GPU was around 60°C)

Not so sure (full disclosure) about what all those parameters mean or indicate.

Would/will need to look into that.

However, I am not sure sure that PSU problems would necessarily manifest as high temperatures unless power to the fans was affected.

Google "ACPI thermal zone ACPI\ThermalZone\TZ00 has been enumerated".

Mostly associated with the CPU overheating - check inside your case and see if you see any thermal paste leaking out.

Need to pin down the symptoms....

Again, it cannot be my temps. If that was the case, my CPU would have shut down when I did the stress test using HeavyLoad.
My computer was idle before it switched over to playing Skyrim (which around that time, pretty sure it was around 44°C) And when I alt-tabbed back to it, it immediately shut down.

However, I plugged up my new PSU today and right now I noticed two things:
1) The coil whine that I used to have with my GPU is gone
2) I can press the power button only once and my computer will turn on at that button press.

I'll keep testing to see how my PC performs with extreme load but for now I think it might have improved.
