Feminist Heroines

Created a Controller yesterday. Costume was originally gonna be a knock-off
of early Marvel Girl then after I was done I opted to go semi-original and
went with a Hellfire type of outfit, early White Queen but with red bikini
bottom rather than a one peice lingerie. Worked my way into the Hollows
then wound up teaming with 2 heroines one of which was quite upset with the
way my character looked. Said my character looked like a stripper (heck, I
like eye candy). Said her mother and grandmother fought for women's rights
back in the day and that her mom and sister are liberated and true
feminists. So she goes on about how women are degraded and attempts to give
me a long lecture about how a woman should think about how she dresses, that
men don't deserve to see naked women, lack of costum options (she wanted
tennis shoes), etc. Okay . . .

Think I told her I was a guy? LOL! Not a chance . . . didn't want to argue
all day about the flaws of feminism and her idea that she was a liberated
woman. Couldn't stand it for very long and had to go kill myself.

*Sigh*. They should add burkahs and that garment Mormon women are supposed
to wear under everything to the costume list. Or do the most feminized male
alt you can manage and call it BullDyke. See what they think of that.

> Think I told her I was a guy? LOL! Not a chance . . .

I would be willing to bet that the number of female CoH players is well
under 10%, probably under 5%. Since the number of female alts approaches
50%...

Actually, you probably could create a costume that looked like a burkah. A
team I was on recently had a character called JAWA which was outfitted like
it's namesake but about 5' tall.

That reminds me of that bit from Hard Day's Night, where the stuffy
oldster tells the Beatles something like "I fought in the war for your
kind!" and a Beatle, I forget which, retorted, "I bet you're sorry you
won!"

Well I don't know the stats but I'm a real woman! I don't tend to
choose the skimpiest costumes but I like flattering ones! What woman
doesn't want to look good? (one of my requirements for a game is I
must be able to play a character at LEAST as attractive as I am IRL.)

Maybe she was RPing? I've had female chars that would react like that.
Or maybe she'd just gotten hit on one too many times. Ah well.

(I WOULD like more 'regular cloths' look options. Seems to be either
skin tight leotards or big shapless baggy things.)

I find it amusing how "women's rights" apparently doesn't include
their right to dress in skimpy clothes if they want to according the
feminist nazis. I'm all for women's rights. I'm just not for the
insane twisting that these extremists take it to.

I would be willing to bet against you. I recently read a study that showed
that 48% of female characters in EQ were played by men, and the female
players there made up 16% of the total. Also among the CoH players I
actually know, there is a pretty good representation of women. They tend
to play less hours than us men, though, is my impression. Also women are
much less likely to play male characters than the other way around, for
some reason.

You character has to stop shopping at that "Near Whore Store".

Personally I think there ought to be more modest clothing options
available for the female characters.

You realize that there ARE more modest clothing options, right? Can't
get too modest with spandex, but...hey, look! A business suit! Flak

Really, are you stupid or just trolling?

I think there's plenty of character options to make a
tough-looking, conservatively dressed lady hero. My two lady
heroes look tough; they don't flash their panties to anyone.

But I would never bash a person for making a provacative looking
costume. That's not fair pool. This is a fantasy game!

Slutty or provacative *names* (if they're also dull) irritate me,
though. If you have a hot and sexy looking costume, it really
speaks for itself. There's no need to draw more attention to it.

Although in a great act of hypocracy I once had a Storm/Mental
Blast Defender named Fairly Starkers with an apposite costume.
But to me that was exempted under the *non-dull* codicil.

And I'd be willing to bet that EQ's storyline and such appeals far more to
women than CoH's. With all the greasy, grimy, sweaty soldier RPGs and MMOGs
appealing to women even less. 😛

A friend of a friend of mine is female and plays EQ. She plays both
male and female characters, and prefers playing male characters when
she doesn't want to be bothered. I also play both male and female
characters, and in fact, my main is female. I happened to dress her
with very little skin showing, but only because it was part of my
character concept (she's a former spy, dresses from head to to in a
black jumpsuit, black mask, black cape). Men still think she's hot,
despite the lack of skin, maybe even moreso because of this (I've been
told so on countless occasions).

As far as feminism is concerned, there are all colors of feminism,
some of which would argue that one of the things that they fought for
is the right to dress how they like. You could have told this woman
that obviously she is too influenced by how men think to dress the way
that she wants to and that because of this, she is letting herself be
a slave to men. If she was truly liberated, she wouldn't care how
another woman dresses.

Calling someone a feminst is kind of like calling them a democrat or a
republican -- it says very little about what issues are important to
them as individuals..

Point in the direction of the "Frigid Bitch Store" where fugly women go to.
BTW, what is your interpretaion of a whore? A woman who like attention?
That would be most women in America. A woman who has had more than one
sexual partner? That would be most women in America. A woman who does not
dress to *your* standard? Guess freedom of expression and right to choose
is not allowed in your world. No one goes to the beach in bathing suits.

You realize this game is based on the ideas of comic books? How many
modestly dressed Heroines are there currenly in print? Does Wonder Woman
fit in this ideal of yours? She-Hulk? Storm? Invisible Woman? Psylock?
White Queen? Phoenix? Please . . .

True, boys are more typical readers of superhero comics. On the other
hand, the urban setting is likely to appeal to women (I notice that in
rural areas, women are the first to leave for the cities). And it's
squarely set in an epoch where women's rights are taken for granted. In a
more practical view, CoH is known as a game you can drop into for a little
while without having to spend hours at end, also a bonus for the less
geeky gender. So all in all, I am not so sure EQ would win the women
gamers, except perhaps those looking for romance ... for some reason, EQ
has got a reputation as cupid. Probably because people waiting hours and
hours for spawn don't have much else to do ... 😉

Clarification, I goofed.

A far worse situation exists when society employs a large

people into prostitution over manufacturing and intellectual duties such as
research & development.

Should have been, properly...

Why not? Male superheroes don't expect their suits to get torn up.
Superhero costumes have traditionally been made of something that
never suffers more than minor wear. And if you're naturally tough
and don't need armor, why bother with it?

Not much different from what you'd see on fit women in any gym,
really.

Like what? There's already full-body suits of various types. The only
thing that's missing is robes and trenchcoats. Which are missing and
much requested for male characters as well.

I understand the desire for different body types and more costumes
are always welcome, but the existing choices don't exactly force
you into exposing a lot of skin.

Y'know, DT... I've had George plonked for quite a while, but I don't
think he's that far off base with his comments about girl's clothes.
Maybe this has jack-all to do with CoH, MMOGs, comics, etc. but it's not
clear if he was talking about the game or the real world.

I don't think there's anything sadder than a young girl dressed in the
latest J.Lo cum-fuk-me whore rags. Unless it's the smothering culture
that's teaching them how kewl and hep it is to dress that way; that
nothing about them matters except the way their ass shows through a short
skirt.

Call me a prude, too. Or the father of four daughters. Or just don't call
me anything, as this is the CoH group and maybe we're talking about how
alts and toons look and nothing more.

Hey, is the US it's ok for 13-yr-old girls to blow the boys in the bus on
the way to school so they get a good start to the day with the most

No, it's definitely something more. ;-)
