when you go into file explorer right click on a folder and go to properties under the general tab there is a heading "attributes" next to this you have a tick box for read only. what is the difference between this and going to the tab security and having read only options in here?

Solution
So if you right click-properties-security you can then edit permissions in the folder.

that sets permissions for user groups.

there is some indication that the read only tick box on folders doesn't actually do anything - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ndows-10/de0aef72-654c-4199-a93a-93a213b6ba76

Where are the read only options on security tab? I think the read options in Security apply to all users in the groups. The folder ones might apply to individual users.

The read only on folders doesn't really stop the user from changing files, its more to stop unauthorised users. User should have permissions to access the files. Turning it off on folder doesn't do anything as, the second you reopen folder it will be on again.
