"... and a staggering five PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots for expansion ..."

Hardly staggering; there are already numerous boards which have more.
As B4vB5 says, I'm more interested in the WS editions, which are likely
to have 6 or 7 slots.

Ian.

Number of lanes also depends on the CPU, Core i7 5820K only has 28 PCIe lanes, the other 2 has 40 PCIe lanes.
For the Core i7 5820K it's 1GPU at x16, 2 GPUs at x16/x8 and 3GPUs at X8/x8/x8, 3 GPUs makes that 24 lanes used. the last 4 can be used for the M.2x4 which uses 4 PCIe lanes.
But if a single card is installed that's x16, 28-16 = 12, if I plug in a PCIe x1 card, then what that means I only have 11 PCIe lanes left.

5 x16 slots? Can someone tell me how many lanes can actually be used at the same time? It's probably in any article on X99, but it slips my mind.
Yeah. 40 lanes available.

The realistic configs with 2-slot video cards are:
1 video card : x16/-/-/-/-
2 video cards: X16/-/x16/-/-
3 video cards: x16/-/x16/-/x8

Similar to the X79 setup.

Actually with a board with a PLX onboard, you can have "88" lanes(40 CPU assumed + 48PLX), cause the PLX will enable switching around WHICH 40 lanes are being used at what port and the latency for that operation is so small you won't notice.

Virtually speaking, you'll have 40+48 lanes available or 5x 16x + 1x8.

The P9X79-E WS has a PLX and I hope the P9X99-E WS when it comes, will have the same specs, just 2011-3 socket and DDR4 RAM ofc.

Thanks for pointing that out. Correction has been made. Yes they are slots not lanes please.

7 slots can be exploited by using single slot cards and/or PCI Express splitter boxes.
Check the system at the top of the Arion CUDA benchmark list, it has seven Titans.
In theory one could use 56 GPUs with a 7-slot board, though in practice I expect
the driver mechanism would fall over long before that point.

Ian.

What a motherboard, can't stop admiring or looking at it, but why are they price this high whereas we could build a computer for the same price .... :) wish they apply this design theme to their Z97, Z87 or my Favorite A88X motherboards ...
