I use Remote Desktop Connection to access my computer from work,
however, my DSL connection is dynamic and has a habit of changing at
random. All I really need is a program that reports it and puts it into
a file, because I can set up a trigger in trillian to automatically IM
me the file. Does anyone know of a good application that can do this?

I use a free dynamic naming service from No-IP.com...

http://www.no-ip.com

The No-IP.com software runs on your PC and on a time scheduled basis
contacts the No-IP.com servers. The servers then know your current IP, as
assigned by your ISP, and map that to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN)
that you can use to call when using Remote Desktop, VPN, VNC, etc. It works
very well...

Check out https://www.dyndns.org (get used to using the https web page
or when you log in your password will be sent to the server
unencrypted). Set up a free account and register your host name. You'll
be able to get to your home computer with a name that's something like
myhostname.dyndns.org.

Some routers have the ability to update the IP with dyndns.org whenever
it changes, but I haven't any success with my Netgear wgr614v5 even
though it claims to support it. I ended up download a windows executable
from dyndns.org and using that instead. It runs as a service and works
like a champ.
