I was wondering about power consumption differences between gdi and direct2d? on a laptop that will be crucial - and also, what about speed and power differences with an igp chip?

Now is it just me but why do I get a feeling that going from 12 ms to 6 ms might look... exactly the same?

in most cases it will, but being one of those people with moms playing games on facebook for hours at a time, I know it isn't always the case.
If I could make her use the geforce 9400 in her laptop for them - simply by changing to firefox, I'm quite sure she'd start liking firefox.

[citation][nom]nebun[/nom]it won't be long before Microsoft will take advantage of GPU processing and code the whole OS to run on it[/citation]
I disagree. Can you imagine running something is massive as Windows on Intel IGP?

[citation][nom]False_Dmitry_II[/nom]What about linux? That looks like it would only accelerate in windows.[/citation]
Direct2D means Windows. I hope they'll build an OpenGL version for us Linux users. I believe Linux is where Firefox first emerged.

Finally all those "I dont play games, I'm so serious and hardworking"-guys can justify buying that expensive graphics card that they always do. "For movie rendering" was getting a bit thin...

Yeah ! How come they embrace Direct2D, isn't OpenGL more .... Open ! and cross-platform.

On the other had, if you already have compiz (with GPU acceleration), that should accelerate firefox somewhat ? anecdotally, I notice Gimp faster with a GPU accelerated linux. I may be wrong, I have not checked the code or looked into the matter further. I am sure there are experts in this forum that can set me straight.

They need to support 64-bit when this comes out. Many more computers are supporting 64-bit now. In fact, in the last run of surveys by Valve, the majority of gamers running Win7 were running the 64-bit version.

[citation][nom]BounceDK[/nom]I can smell all the Ati graphics cards crashing already. Yeah I have one, worst purchase this year I tell you.[/citation]
Just be happy you didn't buy an xfx 8800gtx ... they have a tendancy to be equipped with rubbish memory chips.
Ati isn't always good, but nvidia is mostly worse.
