I'm looking to buy a large capacity drive, either the WD1200JB or a QPS 120MB (2MB buffer) external FireWire solution. I will be using it primarily for data storage and retrieval. Is there any performance advantage to one over the other? Thanks.

the firewire external will have a very hight trans fer rate that will allow mobility , but if you want to install internally the wd would be goo

The FireWire drive is limited to a burst rate of 400Mb where as the internal would be limited to 100MB. Of cource that doesn't say much for the sustained rate of both units.

I would actually look at the External FireWire drive because it would be easy to share with other systems after putting your data on it. It wouldn't be the best "performance" solution, but if your just using it for "data storage and retrival" then you shouldn't need performance.

**Note- I wouldn't feel free to use the external for backup. I've seen a ton of these drives and I don't think they are really too reliable.

Thank you for your input. Fair enough regarding "data storage and retrieval" not requiring a performance drive, but why buy a Ferrari when you're going to drive it in a 55mph speed zone? So far as the external FireWires not being "too reliable", that has my attention and I really appreciate the heads up since reliability is of paramount importance. Actually, I run SCSI disks, but since I need and can't afford a high capacity SCSI drive (a RAID would be ideal) I have to look at lesser solutions. Interestingly, the QPS has no mention of a factory warranty, but the WD equivalent does, though only for one year. Whereas, the WD1200JB carries three years; very telling, I suspect. I'm leaning to the The WD1200JB.

Thanks again.
