Summary:
I'm building a gaming pc that will last a while, with the option to upgrade if I want.
Monitor resolution will be 1980*1080 or 1200.

Are these parts good, or should i get different parts? (Under is a list of parts other people suggested)
Do they go well together?

Parts:

Total cost $2086 AUD = $1861 USD

SSD: $214 Samsung 2.5" 250GB 840 EVO Series

http://www.iibuy.com.au/cooler-master-storm-trooper-full-tower-gaming-case-with-window_p43532.html ] Case: $180 Cooler Master Storm Trooper

Other parts people suggested that i use:

GPU: $519 ASUS GTX770 OC Edition 2GB
Case: $127 NZXT Phantom 410
Case: $141 Corsair Carbide 500R
http://www.iibuy.com.au/corsair-graphite-600t-white-midtower-case-no-psu-2x-200mm-white-led-fans-atxm-atx-steel-structure-with-a-new-window-or-mesh-side-panel_p5951.html ] Case: $185 Corsair Graphite 600T
Mobo: $189 ASRock Z87-EXTREME4
Cooler: $142 water cooler H100i
Cooler: $89 Noctua NH-D14

1. Go for the ASUS DCUII 770 it is fast, silent and stable.

2. Low profile RAM is best if you are going with the Noctua NH-D14 as it is a very very large CPU cooler and high profile RAM will not work with it.

3. Mobo is fine, seems a bit overkill but it is your choice. Cheaper alternative would be an Asus Sabertooth.

4. The sound card on the mobo is very good, you would not require an additional one.

5. The Noctua is one of the best air coolers ever made, it is very large and comes with a Beige and brown colour scheme fans. If that is not okay with you go for the Corsair H100i .

6. As long as the Brackets are there it will work with any CPU.

7. Carbide 500R or try the Corsair 600T.

8. Yes, all the components are compatible.

Thanks.
1. I read the Asus DCII 770 is pretty good, and it's the same price. I'll think about it.
2. What's the difference between ASUS sabretooth and the Maximus Hero?
3. Does the Asus sabretooth ahve a good sound card or will i have to buy separately?
4. I read online that people were getting high temperatures with Haswell CPU's and a Noctua Cooler. Should I be worried?
5. Is there any reason for me to get the H100i water cooler instead?
6. With cases, I honestly don't know the difference. I'll need more research.

1. The difference between the Sabertooth and the Maximus Hero is the TUF coating that comes with all Sabertooth Asus boards. I have never had a Sabertooth board so I can only say that Asus states it dissipates heat and repels dust in a way other motherboards cannot. I tend to agree with them but between the two boards would get the hero. The traditional motherboard components have been working successfully for well over 3 decades and that couldn't have been done without good heat dissipation xD.

2. No, the Sabertooth's audio chipset is not as good as the Hero's though I severely doubt YOU would be able to notice a difference, so I wouldn't factor that into the equation. And no you would not need to buy a sound card unless again, YOU were unsatisfied with the sound quality on the Sabertooth.

3. Haswell's cpu architecture got smaller and faster. As a consequence, when you overclock the Haswell it will get hotter, per 100 mhz than the previous generation's Ivy just as Ivy got hotter than Sandy. Should you be worried? Not at all, especially if you don't have a desire to take your cpu to 4.8-5.0ghz.

4. Is there a reason to get the h100i over the Noctua? I would say yes, the h100i will keep your cpu cooler giving you more OC room while probably being quieter also. Ultimately its a personal preference choice but for my the h100i is a no brainer.

5. I would recommend the CoolerMaster CM Storm Trooper for a case as it looks good, and can fit the h110's 280mm radiator if you so desired. Mostly because it looks good though, because that is the main competition in the case market. They all basically do the job of fitting the hardware inside xD.

Thanks for the reply.
1. The Sabretooth isn't available where I am, and i like the maximus hero better, so I might stick with it. Don't know if there's another one I should try.
2. I've researched the H100i and decided that there's no point getting it. The Noctua is said to be quieter and will ft my needs.
3. For OCing, is the Noctua sufficient?
4. I looked at the Cooler Master Storm Trooper, and it looks real good. Cases are so hard to pick..

I'm mainly still deciding on cases and motherboard

1. There is nothing else you should look at outside of the Hero, its pretty amazing and has taken the cake for z87. Its 5 star on newegg is crazy.

2. Will a Noctua be sufficient to overclock on? Yes, but so will a hyper 212 for 30 dollars. The question is, at 4.5ghz full load, what is the temps on that i5, and they will be lowest on the h100/110 outside of custom water loops. The h100 is a 240mm radiator with 2 120mm fans. If you get that case I linked, you can get the h110 which is a 280mm radiator 2x140mm fans. Better performance while being equally quiet as the h100s.

1. One main reason I didn't want to get the H100i/H100 was because I read online that they were very loud. Is that not true?
2. Do you think i'll be fine with the Noctua if i'm overclocking for the first time? Very confused
3. Do I have to overclock straight away when I build the PC, or can I wait a month or a year?

Is it loud to me? No. To the vast majority of people? No. To some? Yes. You might be in the some category, but I highly doubt it. Do you need an h100 to overclock? Not at all and will the Noctua allow you to overclock? Yes, and since you seem more comfortable with it I suggest you indeed go with the Noctua. Do you need to overclock right away? Of course not but I highly recommend taking your CPU multiplier to 4500mhz when your software is installed and organized the way you like. However you can wait a month, year, or never overclock; whatever you find most comfortable. The important thing is to run a quick prime95 test or some other testing program that will utilize your CPU at 100% load while monitoring temperatures. If you take your CPU to 4.5, run prime 95 for 10 minutes and see your temperatures not moving much from 70sC range, you're good to go for gaming because no game utilizes a processor at 100% load and your temperatures will be just fine.

Since you say the h110 is not loud, i'm thinking about getting it, but i'll have to get confirmation from other users.
Plus I really want a water cooler, it just sounds awesome, haha.

So what do you think of my final build?
I'm caught between the CM Storm Trooper and 600T. I can't decide. 600T has much better reviews.. but The Storm trooper looks so good.

Once a couple of people confirm this build is ok, i'll go with it.
(Next up.. have to choose peripherals.. so much 'work' to do)

Edit: Will i need to buy any Thermal Paste or anything else extra?

I would think the choice is obvious; Though Corsair makes other fine products, their cases do not compete very well with the other case manufacturers. Corsair cases, while built well, lack a reasonable price. The 600T is a mid-tower case at a full-tower price, while simultaneously manging to look incredibly unexceptional. You know you want the Trooper, and I assure it is an excellent product, therefore it seems only logical to buy it. As far as thermal compound goes, Corsair's hydro coolers come pre-applied with a quality thermal compound, so you will not need any aftermarket solutions. For peripherals, I would highly recommend Corsair's mechanical keyboards / mice. I own the K95 (Beautifully constructed, fully mechanical keyboard using MX cherry switches), M65 (8200 DPI Mouse with mechanical switches rates @ 20 million), MM600 (An incredibly expensive mouse pad, $40, that was worth every penny. It actually allows me to control a mouse at 8200 DPI, something I thought was impossible until I bought this pad on a limb. And for headphones in the 1-200 dollar range Sennheiser has you covered. I am off to bed for the night, good luck on your following build and choices,

Prax

I've finally decided the exact build I want. But i'll wait until some people tell me it's ok.
How long does it take to overclock? 1 hour?
Also, is it relatively easy to follow a tutorial to overclock for first time?

I'll look into those peripherals when I get the chance.

Thanks, you're really helpful. I'm so close to being finished!! Can anything be more exhilarating!

Takes 10 seconds to change the frequency multiplier in your bios, and maybe another 15 minutes to run a program called prime 95 to test your temperature. It is easy to overclock and yes there are plenty of tutorial of which I would recommend you watch, related to your cpu.

Thanks, thats reassuring.
I've begun my search for peripherals.
I'm deciding on the only important one.. a monitor.
If you're not going to bed.. could you recommend me a good one :)

I was looking at this one: (I'd prefer 3D)
BenQ XL2411T (3D 144Hz) 24" 1ms HDMI Full HD LED Gaming Monitor
I will mainly use it for gaming , but also web surfing, and movies/tv.
You think thats a good one? or should I go for higher resolution? or ips?

Thanks, you helped me so much!

I don't look fondly on 3D anything because the technology is so niche, poorly developed, and just unnecessary. I am, however, optimistic for the future of immersive solutions but I doubt it will look anything like current 3D. With that out of the way, I think the best 3D monitor on the market is the ASUS VG248QE However the BenQ you linked is perfectly acceptable to plenty of people. But between the two products I would take the Asus monitor over Ben, and especially since it fits the overall build theme.

As a side note, if I was going to buy a monitor right now in this price range, it would definitely be

Asus 1st Pick

Samsung 2nd Pick

Dell 3rd Pick

- Prax

You're right, I think the same, but lol I wanted to watch Jurassic Park in 3D, childhood nostalgia haha.
Just found out I have to buy 3d glasses for $150 extra.
I think i'll stick with non-3d i guess.

But why do you suggest those? What makes them good?
Is 27" a good choice? (instead of say 24")
Are they all IPS? And is IPS better than TN?
Is 1080p a good choice for 27"? Wouldn't a higher resolution be better?

I suggest those because they are the top tier products for the respective companies. The Asus is my first pick because it has an IPS display that I consider superior to dell's, and that Samsung does not specify what panel it is using. That said, its Samsungs 2013 LED monitor, so it probably looks amazing. Yes an IPS display is better than TN but the Dell is IPS also, while the Samsung is not. 1080p is wonderful choice on a 27'' display, though a higher resolution would indeed be better. Unfortunately, a high resolution monitor 2560x1440/1600 are generally $600 and $1200 respectively, and they leach GPU performance (1080p is just the perfect resolution for gaming but if you have a quadfire/4way sli setup then the performance isn't an issue). I personally did away with monitors and went for an LED 1920x1080 32'' Samsung 6500 television, but it cost 600$, and haven't looked back since. I sit 3 feet away and text/pixel noticability is absolutely perfect. So have no qualms about a 27'' display, you'll love it. TL;DR version is out of those 3 monitors, Asus and Dell have the IPS display, Samsung does not. I would take the Asus if given the choice.

Thanks for the info. Out of all my research, i've decided to go with BENQ xl2411T 24".
It's 3D, 120 Hz and has good picture quality.
I read online that it has worse picture quality than IPS, but shouldn't be noticeable.
But i'm confused on how to connect it. Do i use DVI, HDMI or DIsplay port :S ?

DVI; you can use any connection obviously but I believe DVI allows 144hz, where hdmi doesn't and I think display port also would be fine. So dvi or display port.

Ok thanks.
I'll have a look at mouse and keyboard tomorrow, but for now i;'m deciding on speakers.
I've narrowed it down to 2 i Like.
Any recommendations?

WHARFEDALE MOVIESTAR DX-1 - SUB/SAT SPEAKER SYSTEM- WHITE

LOGITECH z906 - 5.1ch Surround Speakers

I really like the first one, it's a home theater system and its been reviewed very well. (wheres the best pc one i could find was z906 and was reviewed badly)

Ya I am more of a quality headphones guy; Sennheiser HD 598 with a 200$ sound card is my route. As far as speakers go, it is no wonder those Logitech's got reviewed poorly. Logitech makes cheap products so if you go in expecting quality, you will be disappointed. So depending on expectations you could be happy or unhappy with Logitech's solution. The only speaks I would buy offhand and know are quality come from Corsair but are unfortunately only 2.1 and I of course prefer my HD 598.

Ok cool, I want to get headphones too, but it's not the same as having good speakers. Especially when it comes to bass.
I might pick up some quality headphones later on.

What i'm wondering now is, can I use my PC with Home Cinema Speakers? (The ones I linked earlier are ones)
I want to get them really badly, but i'm not sure if it's a good match. For example, maybe they're bad to have close to your ears? Or aren't compatible with the system etc..

Also, I made a last-minute change to my build. I've switched out the ASUS Maximus VI Hero for an Asrock Extreme4 Mobo.
That's ok right? Computer won't explode or anything?

It is ok, yes as long as its an 1150 socket asrock extreme 4

As far as compatibility goes on the speakers, I have no idea.

Looks good; To answer your question, is your computer good enough? Of course, but so is a computer with a 760, or a 650; pretty much any dedicated graphics card will be able to run 1440 and 1600p. Just know that your fps with a 1400p monitor will be lower than without it. I would say about 20-30 fps lower. Here is a benchmark comparing 1080p to 1600p.

metro%201920.png

metro%202560.png

From 64 to 40, 24 fps drop. I would expect about the same drop with a 770 considering its similarities to a 680.

- Prax

Hmm, so no 1440p for me?
Or should I just grab a better GPU? or a 4GB model?

Or maybe I should just get a cheaper monitor.
Didn't realise monitor would be the hardest part.

So if the drop is from 64 to 40 now, then in a year it will be much worse .. right?
So i'll be f**cked if i get it..
