First build: please comment

Hi,

I am planning to buy a new computer later this month. Because the major suppliers (Dell, HP,...) tend to sell rubbish for high prices, i decided to build the computer myself. I will mainly use it for games, playing videos and office applications. I also plan to overclock the videocard and processor. (although i have but limited experience here)

What do you think about this one:

(ANTEC SOLO BLACK NO PSU € 88,00) -> I prefer the Thermaltake Swing VB6000 Black, but I havent found it in a store yet

Please bear in mind that i live in belgium and US imports will be to expensive. Therefore i would like to buy the parts in a local online shop, called "Tones"

Another thing, would it be worthwhile to wait until DX10 cards are released (and priced at around 300€) ? Should i buy a cheaper card in the mean time? (eg7600gt @ 200 €)


Any suggestions are welcome!

BTW: my current system is a Dell 8250, with a P4 @ 2.4 Ghz, a Radeon 7900 TX OC'd and 512 MB RDRAM @ 1066 mhz

Tnx for reply! I think i'll just settle with the less powerful 7600gt, maybe with the silentpipe technology, and upgrade later, as u said. I guess it would be able to handle BF2142 and oblivion fairly well?
One more question: is it worth getting the PC6400 RAM? (It only costs 16 € more then the PC5400)

Every thing is ok,just get a 7600GT and it will serve you well until de DX10 cards arrive and you will stil have money to upgrade,and with the RAM get the best you can it will be worth it all the way

I'm not going to go into great details.. but there are a few aspects of your system which could be improved while practically costing you no more money or even saving you money.

Those are your choices for Power Supply and Hard Drive. Now I understand Western Digital have made a name for themselves with there Raptor line (I own some) but when it comes to there traditional 7,200RPM drives you can find much better drives that heat up less during operation and also operate with less noise.

Now the lineup I will recommend to you is the Seagate 7200.10 16MB Cache lineup. They do have a 250GB flavour. The main difference is these drives use a Perpendicular/Vertical design rather then the traditional horizontal placements of the data. This helps to pack more data per disc inside the HD and thus less discs means less moving parts. Do theoritically you get a drive with a longer lifespan (thus 5 YR warranty), more performance (due to the technology employed) less heat (due to less moving parts) and less noise (ditto).

Look at reviews.. you'll be pleasantly surprised.

As for the power supply, I would recommend any of the following:
Enermax, Seasonic, PC Power & Cooling, Fortron, OCZ or Hiper. Antec, Thermaltake, Coolermaster etc do not make as good power supplies. And more often then not the top makers I suggested cost less.

I found another PSU, namely the OCZ ModStream 520 Watt EZMod Power Supply, which is priced at 105 EUR, hence being 5 EUR cheaper. Another option is the OCZ 600 Watt GameXStream Power Supply OCZ600GXSSLI-EU, at 145 EUR, which might be a bit too expensive...

As for the hard disk, I might go for the SEAGATE 320GB 16MB SATA II (7200/300) ST3320620AS at 108.5 EUR. The 250 GB only has an 8 MB cache, but is priced better. (91 €) However, this wouldnt make a huge difference, right?
