First Build, was told to find help

Hello,
I was told by a user on here to post all of my wants into a topic for you guys to help me out with. I have never built my own PC before and am just trying to find things that will be compatible, run efficiently, and be somewhat cheap. Here is everything I have found so far.

Just wanted to get someone to make sure all of that is compatible or if they would recommend I choose something different. I am hoping to leave here with a max spent of $600. And I really need someone to help me decide on a cheap SSD, I'm really confused about those. And one more thing, how do I install and operating system? Will it come with one built in or do I need to get a CD? I was looking to put some sort of Linux on it.

Playing games that run on linux. Mabe a little video editing. Why do you say the phenom is rubbish?

The phenom IIs are NOT rubbish. That's just a biased response. For the price it's good, especially if you want to overclock. It's just not an i5. Which you don't need. Your upgrade path will be limited to steamroller though. Your other option would be an i3 which will likely offer better upgrade choices.

other than that though you're picking parts with horrible reviews. And you want to skip the SSD on you're budget. It's not worth it.

Here's some decent parts. Honestly I can't seem to work with a budget that low with that CPU on my phone when you need a monitor too. Might want to have a look at PCpartpicker.com. I sure others can recommend better complete builds, including intel.just too hard digging for the best deal without a PC around.

It is. Sandy Bridge Pentium's smash it. I'd build a system around an i3 3225 for light video editing.

Thank you very much for these suggestions. I will definitely consider them when making my final purchase. Is there anything else you would recommend? And FYI I am not buying a monitor right away. I have a 17" that can survive me until christmas and i can ask for a monitor as a gift.

I'd get Dell's U2412M as a new monitor, vastly better than any old TN, including the one in that link. I'd also drop the cooler, the i3 can't be overclocked so it isn't required. For the case, I'd get a CM Storm Enforcer.
