I'm looking for some newb advice. I am building my first machine. I have an Asus z97 pro wifi, i7 4790k, thermaltake water 3.0 extreme, Corsair HX750, 16 gb of 1600mhz ddr3, some ssd drives, optical drive, not adding in a video card at the moment. I have read several guides, I'm confident I will be able to put it all together. My question mainly pertains to the BIOS, will I need to update it before I start to put together the motherboard? Do I need to update it at all? Can I tell just by, say plugging in the psu and monitor in and turning it on? I am not planning on overclocking at this point. Any advice or nudges in the right direction would be appreciated!

IIRC you would build the system as standard. Once built and running access the BIOS and it should (on a modern BIOS) allow you to download and flash the firmware upgrade onto your MOBO automatically.

Would this step happen before I installed windows? Or does it matter?

Thanks!
