First flight

Having had two cancellations, it's apparently "go" for my first *real*
flying lesson this afternoon, all on the back of enjoying the Sim and
deciding to try it in real life.

Shall be flying out of Cranfield (EGTC) later this afternoon - not sure
where we're going yet, but as long as we end up back there again I shan't be
too fussed!

Apparently it's a "bit bumpy" up there today - which shall make it fun, I'm
sure. Still, flew in the Dragon Rapide at Duxford on Saturday, landing in a
30knot crosswind, so if that doesn't prepare me for anything...

Wish me luck (as I wave the contents of my wallet goodbye)!

Enjoy yourself! You will find yourself thinking about the details of
that flight for hours after it concludes.

Yikes... Maximum X Wind component on a C172 is about 17 Knots.

I waved - how mean of you not to wave back!

Here is an aerial photo for you then, of Bletchley - or parts of it - can
you see yourself on there 😉

See my other post for impressions of the flight!

Okay, back on terra-firma! Flight was in a Grumman AA5A Cheetah. Had paid
for 2 seater, but got a 4 seater as the smaller one had a generator failure
in the flight prior to mine. So, extra plane for the same money was nice.

I got, as I had hoped for, the left hand seat. Wind was 16 knots at 080.
Runway 4 in use, so a fair wind kept us on our toes in takeoff and landing.
Most notable view was of Silverstone racing circuit from the air, where it
looks rather small and boring!

Here are some first impressions, from someone who has only ever simmed
(apart from the Boeing 737 for holidays, but that doesn't count):

1. Flight into a crosswind, scarey. I like my plane to point forwards, not
sideways!
2. The Cheetah has a standard yoke - I think I prefer a stick, or rather -
think my inputs would be better with a stick.
3. Cheetah's RPM in straight and level flight is about 2000rpm - I thought
it would be higher.
4. Rudder inputs in turns were very small - not much rudder needed at all,
it seemed (use of rudder is something I am yet to master in the sim).
5. Training school planes need work - vis. the landing light didn't work
(although we went through the procedures of turning it on and off all the
same), nor did the autopilot. The backup altimeter was about 50ft out at the
same pressure setting.
6. The Cheetah doesn't have a steerable nosewheel, so steering in the taxi
is by braking left or right - this, I mastered - I am the king of driving
planes on the ground!
7. Taking photos from the air makes me airsick if I am not concentrating on
flying! Ah, I kept my lunch down :)

The rest is still sinking in! Now, off to earn some more money to carry on -
I think.

Glad you had fun, David!

That first flight is always one to remember.
I had a near miss on long final when some joker in a Cessna 152 tried to
clip my Piper Cadet's tail with his right wing. The controller must have
been sleeping or something!

I'm surprised you had time to take a picture!
The second we were levelled at a safe altitude (I think it was 1000ft AMSL)
the instructor told me I was in control and had me do some maneuvers so I
could get a feel for the aircraft and I remained in control for at least 40
minutes. As soon as we were lined up for short final he took the controls
and landed the plane safely.
Right after we left the runway he told me to taxi the plane to the hangar
and that was that. No big deal, since I had taxiid the little thing from
the hangar to the t/o position on the runway. One of the best days of my
life.

good luck! if you find yourself in this part of the world, drop in on
Seething airfield for a while. We are forming a flight sim club - mixing
simulated and real flying - great fun!

Hi David

I told you it was windy!
I can just about make out the office on Mount Farm; to the far side of the
new football stadium site.

My wife bought me a flight up at Cranfield 2 years ago and it was fabulous'
especially once I had got used to actually looking out of the window rather
than the instruments! Then last year she bought me a helicopter flight
which was also great except I got nauseous; the instructor said I was the
third that day and put it down to the hazy conditions which made it
difficult to see a clearly defined horizon.

And mine, at the OU on Walton Hall - just a bit further on, slightly less
easy to see!

Ah, see I did it the other way round - did the Helicopter out of Cranfield
back in 1999 - enjoyed it but still don't want to fly them.

Very hazy yesterday also - and hot, even with the blowers on! Didn't help
when I let the instructor take back over - spent too long concentrating on
the camera, and almost revisited my lunch!

<snip>

Cool. I did my first helicopter trial lesson at Cranfield. Got to see the
BAe Lightning doing high speed taxi runs up the runway. Never thought I'd
hear one of those beasts again!

Regarding the yoke/stick: I don't recall what they are, but CabAir does
have some trainers there that have a joystick instead of the yoke. I think
they're new and run jet fuel through a diesel engine, rather than the
conventional AvGas. (So cheaper to run, whether that brings rental down, I
don't know.)

Hi Simon

As a child, I lived in St. Annes (as in Lytham St Annes) and used to
hear and see those planes zoom over quite often.

BTW, were they not English Electric Lightnings?

Initially, but I think EE may have been consumed by BAe before the Lightning
finished production. (Google certainly returns enough links to BAe
Lightning.)
