First Rig, help refine it please.

Hello everybody at Tom's. I've been racking my brain on trying to learn the basics of building my first gaming pc and have come down to an almost complete rig. I am still missing the PSU and the Case. While I have chosen the other items I have not purchased them, so tweaking is still an option. My actual purchase date is around a 1-1.5 months out.

The main game being played on this unit is Final Fantasy XIV.
Other activities will include the standard word processing, web browsing, and possibly some movie watching.
I will be using Windows 7 (whichever is available with student discount)

Ok to to guide you on what you need as for operating systems get win 7 64bit ultimate if
you can get yours hands on it as 64bit operating systems are unlocked to all memory shown and and used
for 64bit programs and well it runs far better. As for ATI 5870 get a MSI or as i prefer ASUS. A PSU to invest in
i would get ThermalTake 800 watt or any good 800 watt Brand you prefer. And lastly for the Case I think coolermaster
are great cooling Chasis such as coolermaster HAF 922 or Coolermaster Sniper. Let me Know if you have any enquiries Bro

Thank you very much for the response, it is exactly what I was looking for.

For the cases I assume I have searched for the correct ones:

i have the sniper but i replaced the 200mm fans with 120mm fans as they
are more silent and better airflow for the system besides also the case has
airflow control on the top front which is very convinient for users. ]
750watt will be perfect Bro

Yeah go for the Coolermaster HAF 922 Case, Great space for all
your Hardware and tidy cable management inside you will love it :)
Good Choice on the Corsair 4 gig thats what i have currently.

Last question because I do not know the parts market at all. Would it be best to buy as I can or wait and just buy it all at once? Max time I would be waiting is 1.5 Months, but in a few weeks I can pick up about half of my rig.

If it's best to buy as I can, is there a particular order, or just pick whichever and go for it?

Yeah i Know it looks like a nightmare inside But once
The hardware is placed in all your cables and specially
your power cables are routed from the Back and you
are basicly left viewing your hardware and not a
mess of cables in your view and you are left with
a god airflow for your components :bounce:

+1 for that Psu gpu combo, really good units.
My advice, snap up any really good combo deals you can get early. Then buy the rest of the components later, and you never know, you could find they come into combos too

Why not buy the HAF 932 (full tower instead of mid) instead. I mean if you are spending so much on a system why not get a bigger case that is less likely to get small in future upgrades?

I suppose I am just trying to justify my own purchase :)

Best to buy all at once, with a couple of exceptions. If you buy piecemeal, you run the risk of getting a bad/defective part, and without a way to test it, you might miss the timeframe during which you can return it to newegg (or wherever). You can, of course, always deal with the manufacturer to get it replaced, but that is likely a little more of a hassle than newegg's return policy.

Exceptions:
1) If you see a deal on a case, go ahead and get it, any problems with a case should be imediately obvious.
2) If you have another computer that you could use to test new parts, you could buy some stuff piecemeal. On my recent build, there was a deal on that XFX 850W PSU, so I jumped on that, knowing that I could test it with my current computer.

Things that you really should not buy separately ahead of time: CPU, RAM, mobo. (Unless the deal is just insane...it's not worth $10 or $20 to find out you missed being able to return something easily after getting a defective part.)

bpladirector: I wasn't sure about this myself, I mean the full would allow for greater airflow and expansion later but is it worth the extra $60, or since I don't need a ton of expansion would another $60 in a dedicated cooler be better?

MKB 58, this is how I see why a the full case might make more sense. I currently have a mid tower case but I do not want to crossfire inside it or put a large PSU in it either as it seems cramped but maybe manageable.

A case is really just some metal and plastic put together and so it is really low tech. Advances in cases are less likely to make you want to purchase a new one compared to advances in CPUs or VGAs. What happens if you one day have to get a full tower? what do you do with your mid tower?

Again, the idea of spending $100+ on a case seems silly but it might save you later down the line and make things easier (or it may be a waste of time completely)

Though, you could always make your own large case or buy an old large case and modify it. Sure, it would most likely be ugly but that is ok right?

For starters, the Haf 922 is a huge case, it shouldnt really be called a mid tower.

Secondly, the haf 932 does not afford that much better expansion, the only difference is an extra 5.25 bay, and cmon, how many optical drives do people use these days huh?

Thirdly, the PSU mount on the 932 is poor, and this is fixed in the 922, aswel as some questionable build quality.

Fourthly, The only difference that separates the 922 from the 932 in terms of cooling is the single 200mm side fan. These can be picked up for about $10-$15, so the extra $60 charges for the 932 is imo not worth it.

Fifthly, the bulged side doors on the 922 make for better cable management, and allow for taller tower coolers to be fitted without interfering with the side fan, as the side fan is recessed in the door

sixthly, imo, the haf 922 looks better!

Sorry to go on a blast about the 932, but i really do think its not worth the larger markup that CM charge

Hereisphilly makes some good points.

Hey i read some reviews about the 922 and they really mostly are quite positive. I guess the one thing to do is make sure you can fit a large video card like the 5970 (listing this as an example), or have room for two.

From what i read, the 922 can hold two 5970s so it does seem like a good deal if you are sure you don't want the extra space.

My sniper Has the bulge also and it took some time to settle
and manage everything in place but im happy with the final results

Yeah there are great reviews and responses of the coolermaster cases holding 5 and more fans with PSU sitting
at the bottom for example with my sniper case at the end of the month if i open it there is a slight bit of dust by The
PSU but otherwise my heatsinks dont suffer much from dust collection :bounce: :bounce:

Thanks so much everybody for your input. I will be making my purchase much earlier than expected (came into some money early!). Once it's all up and running I will be sure to post pics of the first PC ever built by me.
