flat panel help

i have a system upgrade to do, but the customer has a Compaq fp 500 flat panel monitor he wants to keep. i know nothing about flat panels and i need to know what type of video card will work with that monitor. does anyone know? are flat panel ports all the same? will a video card with flat panel support work with most flat panel monitors? i went to the compaq website but i couldn't find anything about that monitor. the guy doesn't play games, but he does watch a lot of DVDs, so DVD play back is a must. i was thinking about something from ATI, but i have no idea what card. any suggestions?

i have no idea. i have no experience in flat panels and i have never seen the monitor. the guy lives up in the mountains and won't bring the machine into the shop. i have been dealing with him over the phone. it sucks

I think that in order for your problem to be solved he'll have to bring the monitor to the shop. Otherwise, ,how are you even upgrading this guy's computer?

the guy wants us to mount the board, cpu, ram and new video card in a new case. he'll make up the rest of the system out of his old one. he lives about 60 miles from here, we were reffered by a friend of his so he wants to deal with us and not someone closer. i think i have found a video card, the Radeon VE. i think that would work. what do you think? if it won't work the guy will just have to wait. thanks for your replies.

There should be some sort of adapter you could get to go from VGA DVI-I. I'm not sure though. I know that there is one to go from DVI to VGA but vice versa might be tough. Flat Panel should suck for DVD's anyway the resolution isn't good enough.

Look, there are very few digital flat panels out there that require a DVI connector. If the guy has a digital only flat panel with a DVI connector in an old computer - he would know about it since he would have had to of upgraded the v-card when he got the FPM. Besides - it is a very expensive specialty item that he likely would have had to request. Almost all (as in I know of none) of the lesser expensive FPM's are analog that use the traditional VGA adpator. In fact - even in the high end vcard arena where the connectors are DVI - they come with a VGA adapter because - almost nobody, including those with FPM's, have a DVI connection.

Ask him "Did you special order the v-card when you got the comp?" "No" is an automatic VGA card. If "yes" - ask him if the plug is DVI. If he doesn't know, it probably isn't but there is another check with someone who knows nothing about this stuff - I know this may sound too simple - but ask him what color the female plug is off the vcard. If it is blue - it is VGA - if it is white - DVI.
