My wife's Toshiba Laptop Satellite c55t a5222
was working normally last night and today she has to press the Fn key to change the volume. It is acting like there is a Fn lock on or something. I can't seem to find any help on Google, so I figured I'd ask some experts. The Toshiba help page is extremely frustrating. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but my experience on this site has been very positive this far.

Thanks for the help in advance

Solution
Here is the solution I found on another website...

(0) Save all your open documents and stuff and close their respective programs

(1) Navigate to the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Toshiba\System Setting

(2) Double-click on the "System Settings.exe"

(3) Scroll down in the left menu until you find "keyboard"

(4) Click on the "keyboard" menu option and change the default "special function mode" to "normal f1-f12"

(5) Click the "apply" button and allow your computer to restart.

All done!!

Hello,

The following worked for me:
Go to
start -> All Programs -> TOSHIBA -> Tools & Utilities ->function key

Change the "notification" settings

I know, it has nothing to do with notifications, but it worked. I don´t know why.

At the same time, make sure the keyboard settings on :

Start -> All Programs -> TOSHIBA -> Tools & Utilities ->System settings,

is set to ""Special function mode" (default mode in my Toshiba laptop)

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite C670-11M, having the same problem with my Fn key working reversed. By trial and error and based on the information on this forum I partially solved it as follows:

Open: ProgramFiles\Toshiba\Utilities
run: TACSPROP by double clicking it

Activate the box " Fn plaktoets gebruiken" (sorry for the dutch), make sure the box "Fn key twice to lock" is on and apply settings.

Now the Fn key toggles on/off by hitting the Fn key once/twice shortly. This works but something seems to be wrong with the character "t" on my keyboard, it is no working!

he yping now looks liking speeking wih some eeh missing!

Any solution for that?

I FIXED IT, PRESS FN+ESC don't hold it.

Ok so this started happening to me last week sometime. I couldn't figure out what caused it. After an EXHAUSTIVE search online & finding this post, I have tried literally EVERYTHING with absolutely no luck. I am 100% sure that it is caused my something I did, I just can't figure out how to fix it. I seriously think this issue is going to drive me nuts (I'm really serious!)

I see some fixes have worked for some people, for some like me nothing has worked. I thought I would go ahead and post a reply to see if anyone could help me, although I doubt it as everyone has obviously been extremely helpful. Don't you love the Internet for that?

Ok, so like I said, it happened within the last 7 days. It used to be I was able to just push the mute & volume up/down buttons & they would work, now I have to use the Fn button in combination with them for them to work. If I push the mute key without the FN key, it put the browser into full screen, it's weird.

I thought for sure System Settings.exe was gonna be the solution, but it wasn't. I could only control notifications with that anyways.

Then, THEN I saw the post on TCrdMain.exe & I thought FOR SURE that was gonna be it because last week (mysteriously about when this started happening) I had shut some things off in startup & after looking, I had indeed disabled TOSHIBA Function Key Main Module (TCrdMain.exe) So I thought EUREKA that's it, but no go! I don't understand if that's not it what the heck else could it be. I have tried EVERY SINGLE THING listed in this topic.

Anyone have any more ideas? I really thought TOSHIBA Function Key Main Module was it. And yes, I restarted, LOL!

Thanks so much,
VERY Frustrated Monica

I figured out a work around. I myself have an Asus, and I've been working on this for a whole day now. So for me the BIOS setting didn't exist, I could not roll back the mouse driver which I think seems to be the issue, and I tries all sorts of other things, nothing worked. I'm using windows 10, so here is how I fixed it.

Basically what you do is you change the key layout for your keyboard.
1. For this I used the program: http://www.randyrants.com/category/sharpkeys/ and downloaded SharpKeys 3.5. I was able to rebind the keys, even if it does say only up to windows 7, it worked for me for windows 10.
2. So you use the program, rebind the keys (idk if it works with other languages then English with this program), after you are done,
3. Click bind to Registry,
4. Restart your computer, or logg out, and it should be fixed :)

!! I have been bounced around like a ping pong! And its the same issue! I have used the FN key and the volume buttons. I came in one day and my roommate was on my computer pressing the same button over and over. (f8) I know its something simple! I`m tired of taking it to someone. Can someone help me figure this out?

I feel exactly the same way!I haven't found a solution either. I also believe it's a key that was hit. I can't believe no one has figured it out yet (well, the ones that fixed it other ways but I honestly think it may have been a different, but similar issue). I'm still very frustrated as well.

1. Go to your BIOS (press the function key you see during boot that says 'Setup')
2. Select 'Function Key'
3. You may find 2 values - 'Function' and 'Multimedia'
4. Select the one you need. i:e; if you want volume controls or other media functions to work when you press function keys individually, then select option 'Multimedia'. Else if you want function keys to work on press (F1, F2, ..), select option 'Function'
5. Save and exit BIOS
6. Continue with boot.

NOTE:
- 'Boot' means turn on ( starting ) ---- no offence k.. its for the younger gen
- Once you do this, to access F1, F2, .., you may have to hold the Fn key.
- IT can be reversed depending upon the option you select in BIOS Setup

jonrobert26 I am not sure if you had fixed your pc issue yet but look at the scroll lock key and see if it has a blue colored lock underneath, so try to touch and hold your fn key and the scroll lock key just for a second or two no rush and that should unlock your function key. Take care and good luck

Hello Monica. Looks like you have tried everything but would you mind If I asked you to try One other thing. If it doesn,t work then I will have to investigate this issue further. On most laptops not all there is a blue lock emblem under your scroll lock key. Sometimes this works by just pressing the fn key and then the scroll lock key. Hope this helps good luck and God Bless.

Hi, i had the same problem and it was because i disabled toshiba function key at starting the computer.
press (windows key + x) and select task manager, then go to starting programs and enable TOSHIBA funtion key main module, after restarting the computer it should work

I've read through every suggestion and tried them all with no solution.
I did get my "FN reversed" problem fixed by simply uninstalling EVERY Toshiba application on my Toshiba C55Dt-A5307 and downloading/installing the newest Windows 10 versions of System Settings, System Driver, Function Key, and ECO Utility.
After a reboot, everything is working perfectly again.
All settings within the System Settings app have been reverted to their defaults (and I'm not touching them!)

Hope this helps someone!

HI, I have a Toshiba satellite and I had this problem too, all I had to do was click on the start button, click on "All Apps", look for "Toshiba" then under Toshiba click on "System Settings". That should open a window and all you have to do is click on the button that says "Set all settings to default" then press "OK" and everything is fixed. Although my Toshiba is running on Windows 10, it should be about the same thing on windows 7 or 8.

Hold down the Fn key then press the 'scroll' key. It should turn your Number Lock off.

After trying all the solutions here and on other websites nothing was working for me. The last solution I have and it worked is ..... I restored computer to few days back and it is fine. Do restore and it should be ok.

Toshiba P55w
Windows 8.1

So i had this same issue with my Toshiba p55w laptop. What happened was i had a new hard drive installed and the standard toshiba "system tools were not installed after the repair.
note*** this fix is for users who do not have or can not find "system tools" on their machine.

-Go to the Toshiba website and hover the pointer over the "Support" tab. it will bring up a drop down of options to select from
-click on "Drivers & software
-Enter your model number or serial number (located on the back of your laptop or machine) in the box and click go
-Find the "Toshiba System Settings link in the middle of the page ( there are 2 of them. i used the 1st one) Click on it.
-On the left side of the page, you should see a BLUE rounded box that says download, click it. It should start downloading the file.
-After the download is complete, either go down to the bottom of the screen and click on the completed download and the new program will prompt you with a few questions.
-Just follow the on screen prompts and thats it.
------You should now be able to go to the search on your computer and type in "system settings"
-On the left side of the "system settings" menu, towards the bottom, you should see "Function Key" click it
-From here, you can toggle between "Standard F1-F12 mode" and "Special Function mode"
NOTE******** The "special function mode" option will allow you to use your volume and other "FN" keys without using the FN button. just do the same to toggle.

I also have problem with my netbook samsung np148 plus model. after I formatted my windows OS from 7 to windows 8.1. My keyboard worked reversely specially the function key. May any one have the solution for this problem. Thank you in advance for the help.

I am able to get to C:/Program Files (x86)/TOSHIBA/ but the System Setting is not on my computer. Please help
