I removed a severe trojan on a large external hdd with defender and am wondering if quick format will take care of anything that could potentially remain or if full format is necessary.

If your disk was infected with a trojan virus a quick format removes any virus (or disables it).
If you made backups of files of folders from that disk...then the virus can re-infected your system...so make sure to scan any other disks.

In such case, you can run System scan with some powerful antivirus software for malware or viruses.
