hello,
I would like some help doing a format and new OS install on an inspiron
8000.

I have a new copy of Win XP Pro to put on it.... had ME on it b4.
Are there any links on the DELL web site that anyone knows of to help us out
here?

Also is there a special way to get the WHOLE HD to be formatted when giving
it instructions?
thanks for any help,
Bill V.

Boot from the CD and follow the instructions; you can format the drive as
part of the installation.
If you must connect to the Internet before SP1 is installed, make sure you
enable the firewall, or you will almost certainly be hit with a worm -
unless you're on a network behind a solid firewall.

Make sure you install all Windows updates following the SP1 installation.

Well....Edward, we have a problem here..
My son did a format using an ME boot floppy disc...which he says is complete
for the HD.
Now he can't get the laptop to let him boot to the CD for the XP install?
I know ...we started off here on the fly, or off the cuff, so to speak...
but does it make sense to you how / what kind of shape we are in now?
?

Reboot and push F2 at the dell logo. On page 2
of the setup program set the machine to boot from
the CDRom.

OK...well PEN....get this...my
son re-installed Win ME...so now we want to install the Win XP.
but when booting and getting the CD to start the install it says that you
can't install over-top of Win ME and I don't want to do that...
I want it to offer me a format option from the XP install but I can't find
that option.
.....It is loading the set-up files from XP CD at the present...but I think
it is trying to do an up-grade from ME to XP and I don't want it to do
that....ugh...
The Xp Cd that I have has the SP 1 on it already....I did find that out.
any ideas for me at this point?

When asked where you want to install, don't choose the existing Windows
installation.
Choose to delete the existing partition and start over.

Ok Edward, check this out...I went through to the part where it asks to
delete the partition and when I pressed "D" to delete the partition it says
that
=========================
"setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected
partition.
This partition contains temporary setup files that are required to complete
the installation."
============================
Now what do you have an idea what I have to do to get this Xp Pro loaded?
Please....
I am going to hold at this spot for a few mins to see if you happen to see
this post and answer it.

Download a boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com - doesn't matter which one, as
long as it has fdisk on it. Boot the floppy and run fdisk, deleting the
non-DOS partition (assuming you used 9x) that shows up.

Then redo the installation.

I'm curious. What's the non-DOS partition have to do with this?

OK, Edward...here's the latest..
Good news.
I ran the boot disc on the floppy and formatted.
etc. etc....then the part that my son Samuel had overlooked was to power
down and hit the F2 to get into the set up for the boot first drive...so I
got that part and the rest has come along nicely so far.

At the present I am letting the XP disc format HD C again......even
though....it is at 92% so we will know soon the rest..

thanks for the help a lot..
best regards,
Bill& Samuel....

An NTFS partition will show up as non-DOS in most versions of MS-DOS, which
is what most bootdisks are built from.
