I'm a bit late to the game, but my condolences to the families of those that died.

I am simply glad that my phone is 100% made in Japan, and I will ensure that my next PC will contain minimal Foxconn, or for that matter, Made-in-China content.

[citation][nom]tayb[/nom]You wouldn't even know that you were buying anyways. Nothing that comes out of these factories are labeled as being manufactured by Foxconn. Boycotting them would almost be the equivalent of boycotting electronic items as they employ over hundreds of thousands of workers and have manufacturing contracts with dozens of companies including HP, Dell, Apple, and IBM just to name a few. We are all sadly reaping the reward of this cheap abusive labor.[/citation]
Actually they make Motherboards, Video Cards, Cases and CPU coolers branded as Foxconn, the rest though, all the tiny parts and products built for other companies aren't branded though and are much more widespread.

How sure are you that your phone is 100% Japan made? also good luck building a PC that has nothing made in China, when it comes to small but vital parts they hold a huge amount of power.

I think it's time to start boycotting this company. As appreciative as we are for the products their workers product for us, I have no interest in supporting a company that does not value their employees' human lives on this earth.

Why are you guys so mad about it? You think it only happen in China? I can tell you even in USA, it is the same.

I worked in a computer company, standing up 8 hrs at least and 12 hours a day when busy, no benefit, no health care, no vacation. Bathroom breaks are restricted to a scheduled ten minutes every two hours. Lunch break is half hour and only got two microwave to heat the food for almost 20 people. The working area is in warehouse, no air condition, the roof is low, no insulation. It is hot like hell in summer and freeze to dead in winter.

"Life is meaningless" in USA

[citation][nom]slaveinusa[/nom]"Life is meaningless" in USA[/citation] You're speaking to people who would rather buy from a WORSE company than Foxconn simply to be seen taking a stand against Foxconn...they don't care about you, it's all about themselves. They're only pretending to care about workers to the extent that it makes them look good to do so.

I don't see why the Foxconn workers can't talk while on the production line. I used to work an assembly line job a long time ago and I can tell you it's the most mindless job ever. After 2 weeks you don't even have to THINK about what you're doing anymore, you hands will practically just put together the stuff by themselves.

My buddy and I would talk about all sorts of stuff and time would just fly. Our productivity never fell nor did our quality ever suffer. Plus, it actually made coming to work actually tolerable.

Well, if someone really unknown to me has to die in order to allow Apple keep building cool stuff and her stockholders keep buying new Porches, I really don't see any problem.

It's sad that we actually encourage western companies to encourage slavery in... People's Republic of China. Money is everything, I know.. :/

As I said before, it's probably because if their workers remove hearing protection to talk, it's so loud that it causes hearing damage, like the person interviewed for this article claimed.

Also, I'm reposting my post that got voted down because the people here are too stupid to recognize truth.

Forgive me for not being overly sympathetic here but...

1. It's pretty rare that an employer here in the US that gives so many breaks. I mean seriously, a 10 minute break guaranteed every 2 hours, that's pretty generous. This article is designed to gain sympathy, but you'll get none from me on that point. I'm surprised they didn't leave that info out. Now if they said that you rarely ever get breaks unless you're literally about to crap your pants, then I might be sympathetic, because there are MANY jobs here in the US that are like that.

2. Complaining about not being able to make friends while working on a factory floor? You're getting paid to work, not socialize. If you really go to work to make friends, do it on your 10 minute break that they so kindly give you every 2 hours, or your meal break. Again, no sympathy from me.

3. Yes, their wages are comparitively low compared to other nations, but it's enough to live on, and higher than their minimum wage. 50% of jobs in america are like that, just barely enough to live on, maybe be able to save a little if you work some overtime. Again, no sympathy here. For those who say that these people would be making XX dollars here in the US, yes, maybe, but they'd also be paying $1500/month in rent, $500 for gas and groceries, etc.... It's all relative to the cost of living, and you can guarantee that those chinese workers are making enough to pay their bills, otherwise industries wouldn't be growing, nor would their middle class. And both of these are growing exponentially right now.

4. He never would have suffered hearing loss if he kept his earplugs in and worked like he should have, instead of taking them out and trying to chat all day with his coworkers.

And if you're the type of person that votes down my post, you're ignoring the facts and/or have no idea what it's like to work hard and eek out a living, no matter the country. It's all the same everywhere you go, they pay you just enough to keep you there, and not a penny more. And when enough people start leaving your workforce, or in this case killing themselves, they start handing out enough concessions and raises to keep the company from falling apart. Disagree with me all you want, but what I say is true.

I WILL NOT BUY PRODUCTS MADE BY FOXCONN.
UNLESS:
1) EMPLOYEES SHOULD NOT WORK MORE THAN 10HRS PER DAY
2) NO MORE THAN 6 DAYS PER WEEK
3) PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES FOR EMPLOYEES
4) IMPROVE THEIR LIVING CONDITIONS , 2 PER ROOM PLEASE

I do find this funny. Then again I honestly don't care one bit somebody jumped to their deaths. It was their decision to die.. Good for them. I know plenty of people that work in factories, and I used to be on of them. That thought their lives was meaningless. BOO FREAKING HOO.

So you're going to buy from another company that DOESN'T do those things AND pays LESS than Foxconn...instead?

Giant greedy corporations care NOTHING about people or the environment, and will send jobs to wherever they can get maximum exploitation of the workers, maximize profits, and to hell with the environment. The G20 countries need to pass laws that required companies to meet minimum standards of behaviour (workers rights, conditions of employment, environmental impact, etc.). If your company does not meet these standards anywhere in the world, you are not allowed to sell ANYTHING in the G20 countries. Of course, this will NEVER happen because these giant greedy corporations have our leaders in their back pockets. Besides, installing nets around buildings will solve the problems.

160 dollars a month....
dear god. im sorry but if i was an executive at that company i couldnt let that continue. pay the people some money you stupid ignorant a$$holes. you make so much money anyway whats paying your employers more so that your company wont be recognized so badly. i realize some people need jobs but cmon thats just not fair.

[citation][nom]atdhe[/nom]Welcome to the true world of Technology.[/citation]
it's not just technology, it's blue-collar work in general. i worked at a shipping warehouse for a year and a half and i know exactly what these employees are talking about. it's a bleak, dismal existence that destroys your humanity. given the number of employees and that their conditions are even worse than mine were and i'm actually surprised at few suicides there have been.

By the way, Foxconn just announced yet another raise, this time their wages will go from 900 renminbi (£91.30) per month two weeks ago to 2,000 renminbi, and will take effect in October. This is on top of the raise they just gave them a couple weeks ago.

Score a major victory for Thai workers, now if only America would catch on and treat their workers as good as Thailand does.

You are clueless.

They now make around nearly 3 times what they made a month ago, because of all this. But for the sake of argument, let's just pretend that they only make $100 per month. Their room/board/probably even meals are free. Everything else they need can be bought for their wages. They live comfortably on their wages because everything is cheap and it's all about the cost of living. Why do you mothertruckin morons assume that they have $2000/month in bills? They make pennies on the dollar, and pay pennies on the dollar to live there. Goddamn pull your mothertruckin heads out of your asses or stop pretending to be educated adults who should know these things.

Damn it, you guys live on a little pink planet or something? We went through that for over a 100 years in the western world, industrial revolution anyone? They have 1.5 BILLION people in a 3rd world country. Do you expect health and safety to be akin to the west? Just look at what China was 20 years ago, a hardcore totalitarian regime in a near starving state. If they had 1 bad agricultural year people would die by the millions of starvation.

This is the best they can expect in the REAL world.

For those that boycott foxconn products, other companies use foxconn to assemble their stuff. Apple - ipods, iphones, ipads, HP - laptops, PC, etc etc etc get assembled by Foxconn in china...

What shocks me the most is how many people are surprised by this. Here in the USA I work for a company for 17 years, that was worst than this, except for the pay.
You worked 12 hour shifts.
If your replacement (the next shift) did not show up you would be forced to work 4 more hours, No exception. If you refused to extra time, you would receive 10 day suspension for the first offense, any additional occurrence would result in termination.
No sitting except for your 20 min lunch. No other breaks! Unless you worked 16 hours, then you would get a second lunch. You could eat on your second lunch if you had the foresight to bring in extra food.
If you drive a tow motor, you are not allowed to stand (except if it is required to do the job).
No talking to coworkers.
You had to work any scheduled over time. One year I only had 3 days off for the whole year, that’s including holidays.
If you get hurt on the job, they would falsify the documentation or evidence to get rid of you. Like if you got hurt on a piece of equipment, they would fix the equipment and then bring the company doctor out and demonstrate that it was impossible for employee to have gotten hurt on a perfectly operating piece of equipment. It’s no longer workman comp, you must have hurt yourself at home. If this process took over 10 days, then they could terminate you for failure to submit sick leave forms with in the allow time frame of 10 days.
This was from a very large company. 30,000 plus employees. They make pool chemicals, brass sheet and rod; make ammunitions for a well known brand name starts with a W.
There are no federal laws in the USA that guarantee any breaks, including lunch. Unless you are a minor.
If it happens here, it will happen in other countries.

Life is not meaningless, someday the earth will be restored to a utopia (bible). Right now it's anything goes until our creator steps in. For now it is a time to be tested, a time "FOR GLORY!"(Spartans LOL). While I don't think I could personally, the person in the photo could have made one hell of a last stand peacefully like Martin Luther King. In most revolutions there is some type of spark, this person could have been that spark (meaning). Capitalism did not cause this maybe it could help idk?

Isn't this the same company that makes evil apple handheld products? Good thing I don't own any. Sadly, I see foxconn ports inside of some of my PCs which probably cost relatively little to nothing to make 🙁

12 hour shifts are no joke. I was sketchy on taking a job like that once before. Although I would do it now, my mental state back then would not have been able to tolerate it so I can feel for these people.

You guys realize that you can joke around all you want about "china owns the usa blah blah blah" but truth of the matter is that I chat online with people that work in factories out there and it is no party believe me. They have workers at some places live in dorms sometimes maybe even in the same building they manufacture or sell products in. And they can't take days off even if they get a fever or other normal sickness without possibility of termination. These people have babies to feed just like anyone else on Earth. I think people take things for granted.

And anyone going on and on about China owning the US because of some silly national debt investment is just another spoiled brat. You people need to wake up and see what is going on around you in the world. Apple needs to treat their workers better and for the amount of money the gouge you for their products they surely can afford to. I absolutely do NOT buy apple products because I know how they treat their workers among other things that is wrong with them.
